Canadian University Rowing Association
The Canadian University Rowing Association is the governing body for post-secondary rowing in Canada. Its purpose is to promote participation in rowing through academic and sporting excellence at Canadian Universities. The Canadian University Rowing Championship (CURC) is hosted annually in early November by one of the member institutions. It is a showcase of top Canadian Under 23 and Senior rowing talent where many of the medalist and finalist athletes have represented or will go on to represent Canada internationally. Rowing (sport)
Rowing, sometimes called crew in the United States, is the sport of racing boats using oars. It differs from paddling sports in that rowing oars are attached to the boat using oarlocks, while paddles are not connected to the boat. Rowing is divided into two disciplines: sculling and sweep rowing. In sculling, each rower holds two oars—one in each hand, while in sweep rowing each rower holds one oar with both hands. There are several boat classes in which athletes may compete, ranging from single sculls, occupied by one person, to shells with eight rowers and a coxswain, called eights. There are a wide variety of course types and formats of racing, but most elite and championship level racing is conducted on calm water courses long with several lanes marked using buoys. Caileigh Filmer
Caileigh Filmer (born December 18, 1996) is a Canadian national representative rower, an Olympian and a 2018 world champion. Caileigh graduated from Mount Douglas Secondary in 2014 and started at University of California in fall of 2014. She won a bronze medal at the 2014 Summer Youth Olympics in the coxless pair event alongside Larissa Werbicki. She represented Canada in the Rowing World Cup I and Rowing World Cup II in the women's pair in 2016 and then was selected to represent Canada at the 2016 Summer Olympics in the women's eight event. Larissa Werbicki (born 28 June 1996) is a Canadian rower. Career Werbicki won a bronze medal at the 2014 Youth Olympics in the coxless pairs event alongside Caileigh Filmer and a silver medal at the 2014 World Rowing Junior Championships in the pairs event alongside Filmer. She competed at the 2019 Pan American Games where she won a silver medal in the coxless pair event alongside Jessie Loutit.
