The Canadian Life and Health Insurance Association Inc. (CLHIA; french: Association canadienne des compagnies d'assurances de personnes) is a voluntary trade organization representing life insurance and health insurance providers in Canada. The organization was formed as the Canadian Life Managers Association by executives representing eight Canadian life insurance companies on May 5, 1894; and was incorporated in 1901 as the Canadian Life Insurance Officers Association. The Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions (OSFI; french: Bureau du surintendant des institutions financières, BSIF) is an independent agency of the Government of Canada reporting to the Minister of Finance created "to contribute to public confidence in the Canadian financial system". Assuris is a nonprofit organization under Canadian federal regulation to protect policyholders of life insurance instruments if a life insurance company becomes insolvent. It is designed to allow a block of policies to be transferred to a solvent company in which the policies will continue to be honoured (similar to the Canada Deposit Insurance Corporation for deposit accounts).
