Canadian Condominium Institute
The Canadian Condominium Institute (CCI) is an independent, non-profit organization formed in 1982 to represent all facets of the condominium/ strata community. It has 17 Chapters across Canada. Origins Toronto property manager David Medhurst established the CCI in November, 1982 with Alvin Rosenberg (his law firm incorporated CCI), Beth Shier, the editor of Condominium Timeshare Magazine, Jonathan Fine, a Toronto Condominium Lawyer at Fine & Deo, Edward Furlong, a condominium accounting specialist and Karl Habb, a future president of the North York Condominium Association. The first meeting was held at Toronto's Inn on the Park Hotel on November 25, 1982, and those present are considered 'founding members' of the CCI. Condominium
A condominium (or condo for short) is an ownership structure whereby a building is divided into several units that are each separately owned, surrounded by common areas that are jointly owned. The term can be applied to the building or complex itself, as well as each individual unit within. Residential condominiums are frequently constructed as apartment buildings, but there are also rowhouse style condominiums, in which the units open directly to the outside and are not stacked, and on occasion "detached condominiums", which look like single-family homes, but in which the yards (gardens), building exteriors, and streets as well as any recreational facilities (such as a pool, bowling alley, tennis courts, and golf course), are jointly owned and maintained by a community association. Strata Title
Strata title is a form of ownership and housing tenure devised for multi-level apartment blocks and horizontal subdivisions with shared areas. The word "strata" refers to apartments being on different levels. Strata title was first introduced in 1961 in the state of New South Wales, Australia, to better cope with the legal ownership of apartment blocks. Previously, the only adequate method of dividing ownership was company title, which had a number of defects, such as the difficulty of instituting mortgages. This term also applies to house-type strata title units in Australia. Other countries that have adopted the Australian system (or a similar variant) of apartment ownership include: Canada (Alberta, British Columbia), Fiji, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, New Zealand, the Philippines, Singapore, South Africa and the United Arab Emirates. Mediation
Mediation is a structured, interactive process where an impartial third party neutral assists disputing parties in resolving conflict through the use of specialized communication and negotiation techniques. All participants in mediation are encouraged to actively participate in the process.
