Canada At The 2009 World Championships In Athletics
Canada competed at the 2009 World Championships in Athletics from 15–23 August. A team of 31 athletes was announced in preparation for the competition. Selected athletes have achieved one of the competition's qualifying standards. The team includes the 2007 World Championships silver medallists Perdita Felicien and Gary Reed. There are few notable absences on this year's team, including Tyler Christopher, a former world bronze medallist in the 400 metres (hamstring injury), veteran middle-distance runner Kevin Sullivan, who has been on every world championship team since 1993 (torn Achilles tendon) and heptathlete Jessica Zelinka, fifth at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, who is sitting out the season after giving birth to her first child. Athletics Canada
Athletics Canada or AC (french: Athlétisme Canada) is the national governing body of athletics in Canada, which includes track and field, cross-country running, road running, and race walking. Athletics Canada is involved in many aspects of the sport at the local, national, and international level – providing the rules, officials, coaching education, sports science and athlete development, youth programs, masters (age 40+) competition, and an annual meeting. It also organizes the annual Outdoor Track and Field Championships and the Indoor Track and Field Championships. Jared Connaughton
Jared Connaughton (born July 20, 1985) is a Canadian former track athlete who specialized in the 100m and 200m. He is now a physical education cross country, and track and field coach at a private school in Fort Worth, Texas (Fort Worth Country Day). Biography Connaughton was born in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Canada. He is the son of Susan and Neal Connaughton. He attended Bluefield High School and graduated in the spring of 2003. Jared received a B.A from the University of Texas-Arlington in 2008. He is married to fellow University of Texas-Arlington athlete, Tamesha (nee Graves). They were wed in December 2011. The couple have two children, Morgan 5 and Louis 3. Junior Career: Jared is a four time medalist at the Canadian Legion Championships (1 Gold, 3 Silver), he also won two silver medals at the 2002 Canadian Junior championships in Kitchener, Ontario. Dylan Wykes
Dylan Wykes (born June 6, 1983) is a Canadian long-distance runner. He represented Canada in the marathon at the 2009 IAAF World Championships in Athletics in Berlin, Germany as well as the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, England. In April 2012, Wykes ran the Rotterdam Marathon in a time of 2:10:47 and qualified for the 2012 Summer Olympics. With this mark, he is currently the third fastest Canadian marathoner of all time. Early life Wykes was born and raised in Kingston, Ontario, where he attended Frontenac Secondary School. He competed successfully throughout high school, winning the provincial high school (OFSAA) cross country championships in 2001 as well as the 3000m at the 1998, 2000 and 2001 OFSAA track & field championships. He also won the junior race at the 2002 Canadian Cross Country Championships in Moncton, New Brunswick. Following high school, Wykes attended Providence College in Providence, Rhode Island.
