Canadian Olympic Committee
The Canadian Olympic Committee (COC; french: Comité olympique canadien) is a private, non-profit organization that represents Canada at the International Olympic Committee (IOC). It is also a member of the Pan American Sports Organization (PASO). History While Canadian athletes first competed at the Olympic Games at Paris 1900 followed by St. Louis 1904, it was not until 1907 that the IOC officially recognized a National Olympic Committee (NOC) for Canada. Karen Stemmle (born 27 January 1964) is a Canadian former alpine skier who competed in the 1984 Winter Olympics. Karen specialized in the Downhill discipline where she reached speeds of up to . She raced on the World Cup Alpine Ski Circuit for 5 years with her best finishes being a 4th place in Verbier, Switzerland and a 4th place in Sunshine, Alberta, Canada. Shirley Firth
Shirley Firth (31 December 1953 in Aklavik, Northwest Territories – 30 April 2013) was a Canadian cross-country skier who competed in four consecutive Winter Olympics in 1972, 1976, 1980 and 1984. Career Of Metis descent and a member of the Gwich'in First Nation, Firth was one of the first indigenous North Americans to represent Canada in the Olympic Games. Firth was the recipient of the Order of Canada, the Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee Medal, and the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal. She was also voted Canadian Women's Nordic Skier of the Year six times by ''Ski Racing Magazine.'' She was the twin sister of fellow ski team member Sharon Firth. Sharon Firth
Sharon Firth (born 31 December 1953) is a Canadian former cross-country skier who competed in the Winter Olympics in 1972, 1976, 1980 and 1984. Firth's mother was Gwich'in and her father was Métis. She and her sister grew up in the Gwich'in First Nation. She is the twin sister of fellow ski team member Shirley Firth. They became the first indigenous women to be inducted into Canada's Sports Hall of Fame in 2015. Firth received a National Aboriginal Achievement Award in the sports category in 2005. Sharon Firth also received the John Semmelink Memorial Award in 1972, the Commissioner’s Award in 1981, the Order of Canada in 1987, and the Queen's Golden Jubilee Medal in 2002. Pierre Harvey
Pierre Harvey, (born March 24, 1957) is a Canadian sports athlete. He was the first Canadian male athlete to compete in both the 1984 Summer Olympics (road cycling) and 1984 Winter Olympics ( cross-country skiing). Early life and career Born in Rimouski, Quebec, he won three gold medals in cross-country skiing in the 1979 Canada Winter Games. First competing as a cyclist at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal, Harvey finished 24th in the individual road race. He was also a silver medallist in the Road Race at the 1978 Commonwealth Games in Edmonton. Competing in cross-country skiing from 1982 to 1988, Harvey's best finish at the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships was 16th in the 15 km event at Oslo in 1982. He would earn a total of three victories in his career, including a victory in the 50 km event at the Holmenkollen ski festival in 1988.
