Campaign Legal Center
Campaign Legal Center (CLC) is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) government watchdog group in the United States. CLC supports strong enforcement of United States campaign finance laws. Trevor Potter, former Republican chairman of the Federal Election Commission, is CLC's founding president. Activities In 2004, it was a party to complaints filed with the Federal Election Commission against groups like the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth and America Coming Together, for trying to directly influence federal elections. In 2006, CLC testified before Congress in support of reauthorizing the Voting Rights Act (VRA). CLC was critical of former vice-presidential candidate John Edwards's use of charity organizations which he had founded, complaining they were being used chiefly to keep himself in the public eye in preparation for a possible 2008 presidential run. Trevor Potter
Trevor Potter (born October 24, 1955) is a lawyer, former commissioner and chairman of the United States Federal Election Commission. He is the Founder and President of the Campaign Legal Center, a nonprofit organization which works in the areas of campaign finance and elections, political communication and government ethics. A Republican, he was the General Counsel to John McCain's two presidential campaigns. Potter is a vocal critic of unlimited corporate spending and dark money in politics allowed by the ''Citizens United v. FEC'' ruling. He has been described by the ''American Bar Association Journal'' as "hands-down one of the top lawyers in the country on the delicate intersection of politics, law and money". VoteRiders is an American non-partisan, non-profit 501(c)(3) organization whose mission is to ensure that all US citizens over 18 years old are able to exercise their right to vote. W Spann LLC was a phantom company created at the behest of an originally unknown person by Boston lawyer Cameron Casey on March 15, 2011, apparently for the sole purpose of anonymously donating one million dollars to Restore Our Future, a Super PAC supporting U.S. Presidential candidate Mitt Romney. After donating the money on April 28, the company was dissolved on July 12. Its given address in Midtown Manhattan at 590 Madison Avenue, a 41-story tower, had no record of its tenancy. The address is shared by Bain Capital, of which Romney was once chief executive officer, among other companies. Alex Stanton, a spokesman for Bain Capital, denied any affiliation between the two companies. Romney's campaign did not comment on the donation.
