Camp Arrowhead (Tuxedo, North Carolina)
Camp Arrowhead, also known as Camp Glen Arden after 1972, is a historic summer camp and national historic district located near Tuxedo, Henderson County, North Carolina. It was established in 1919 by the Green River Manufacturing Company as a recreational facility, and became a boy's summer camp in 1937. The district encompasses 18 contributing buildings, 1 contributing site, and 5 contributing structures. Notable Rustic Revival style contributing buildings include the Recreation Hall/Gymnasium (#1919; alterations 1941; ca. 1940s); the group of log cabins dating from the original use of the camp by the Green River Manufacturing Company (1919); Ramshackle Cabin (1937); the Dining Hall/Kitchen (1941; alterations c. 1946); Mansion Cabin (c. 1946); and the Horse Barn (1953). Tuxedo, North Carolina
Tuxedo is an unincorporated community in Henderson County, North Carolina, United States, which was originally called Lakewood. Etymology Tuxedo is a corruption of an Indian phrase, ''p tauk suttough'', meaning "place of the bears." History Early in the 20th century, the small town of Lakewood, North Carolina, changed its name to Tuxedo (after a town in NY State) to avoid confusion with a similarly named town in North Carolina.; History of Henderson County website; The "Official site of Henderson County Tourism Development Authority;" accessed November 2015 A large mill, the Green River Manufacturing plant, employed some 250 area workers after its completion in 1910. Henderson County, North Carolina
Henderson County is a county located in the U.S. state of North Carolina. As of the 2020 census, the population was 116,281. Its county seat is Hendersonville. Henderson County is part of the Asheville, NC Metropolitan Statistical Area. History The county was formed in 1838 from the southern part of Buncombe County. It was named for Leonard Henderson, Chief Justice of the North Carolina Supreme Court from 1829 to 1833. There is no evidence Henderson ever passed through the area. In 1855 parts of Henderson County and Rutherford County were combined to form Polk County, and in 1861 parts of Henderson County and Jackson County were combined to form Transylvania County. Henderson County, which in 1861 encompassed present-day Transylvania County as well, contributed 1,296 soldiers to the Confederate States Army out of its approximately 10,000 population, as well as 130 Union troops. Adirondack Architecture
Adirondack architecture refers to the rugged architectural style generally associated with the Great Camps within the Adirondack Mountains area in New York. The builders of these camps used native building materials and sited their buildings within an irregular wooded landscape. These camps for the wealthy were built to provide a primitive, rustic appearance while avoiding the problems of in-shipping materials from elsewhere. Elements Elements such as whole, split, or peeled logs, bark, roots, and burls, along with native granite fieldstone, were used to build interior and exterior components. Massive fireplaces and chimneys built of cut stone are also common within the Great Camp architecture.
