Cameron Highlands
The Cameron Highlands () is a district in Pahang, Malaysia, occupying an area of . To the north, its boundary touches that of Kelantan; to the west, it shares part of its border with Perak. Situated at the northwestern tip of Pahang, Cameron Highlands is approximately east from Ipoh, roughly north from Kuala Lumpur or about from Kuantan, the capital of Pahang. It is the smallest municipality in the state. Surveyed by the government geologist and explorer William Cameron''Straits Times Weekly Issue'', 22 November 1886, Page 1 in 1885, the outpost consists of three mukims (subdistricts), namely Ringlet, Tanah Rata and Ulu Telom. List Of Hill Stations In Malaysia
Ten hill stations have been built in Malaysia's mountainous areas. Four are in the state of Pahang, two are in Perak, and one each are in Kedah, Negeri Sembilan, Penang, and Selangor. Cameron Highlands is the largest hill station, covering of land, as well as the highest, at an elevation of above sea level. The concept of a hill station in the Malay Peninsula began during the colonial period of British Malaya. The British were not used to the environment, especially the hot Tropical climate, tropical weather, endemic illnesses, and mosquito breeding areas. As a result, they began looking for alternative ways to allow British people to stay in tropical countries for a longer durations, as the travel distance and the British government's leave policy prevented any people who had settled in tropical countries from returning to Britain on a regular basis. Camellia Sinensis
''Camellia sinensis'' is a species of evergreen shrub or small tree in the flowering plant family Theaceae. Its leaves, leaf buds, and stems can be used to produce tea. Kea Farm
Kea Farm, at an altitude of 1,610 metres (5,282 ft) above sea level, is the highest located settlement in the Cameron Highlands and also peninsular Malaysia, and it is one of the most famous tourist spots in Cameron Highlands. Plenty of stalls selling fresh local produce, flowers and ornamental plants, butterfly farms and self-plucking strawberry farms can be found here. Kea Farm is also accessible to the BOH Plantations Sdn. Brinchang (also spelt Berincang) is a town and hill resort located at an altitude of in Cameron Highlands in the state of Pahang, Malaysia. The town's name is derived from nearby Gunung Brinchang, which is the second highest point in Cameron Highlands. Brinchang is the second largest township of Cameron Highlands, situated on a gently sloping plateau about 2 km after Tanah Rata or 3 km before Kea Farm. While relatively small in spread compared to Tanah Rata, Brinchang is the densest in development - a tourist hub with local flavours and style. William Cameron (explorer)
William Cameron (1833-1886) FGS, FRGS was the explorer whose name is commemorated in the Cameron Highlands. Brother of John Cameron, of Singapore, William was born in Glasgow, educated at its High School, and first worked there as an accountant. He emigrated to Australia, where he studied geology and the goldfields before returning to Scotland where he reported on the gold discovered at Kildonan, Sutherland. From discussions with miners he wrote reports for the '' North British Daily Mail'' which led to a Royal Commission on the Truck Acts. He then went to report as a war correspondent with the French army on the Franco-German War, but was arrested as a spy, condemned to death, and only freed after strenuous diplomatic representations. For a time, he then worked in finance in London. He then went to Singapore where his brother was proprietor of the ''Straits Times''.
