Camelot (ward)
Camelot is an electoral ward of South Somerset District Council in Somerset, England. It is one of the wards that makes up the parliamentary constituency of Somerton and Frome. Camelot covers an area of and in 2011 a population of 2,742 was recorded. A rural ward, the A303 road passes through; it contains the villages of Marston Magna, Rimpton, Sparkford, Queen Camel, West Camel and Weston Bampfylde. South Somerset
South Somerset is a local government district in Somerset, England. The South Somerset district covers an area of ranging from the borders with Devon, Wiltshire and Dorset to the edge of the Somerset Levels. It has a population of approximately 158,000. The administrative centre of the district is Yeovil. On 1 April 2023, the district will be abolished and replaced by a new unitary district for the area at present served by Somerset County Council. The new council will be known as Somerset Council. History The district was formed on 1 April 1974, and was originally known as Yeovil, adopting its present name in 1985. A303 Road
The A303 is a trunk road in southern England, running between Basingstoke in Hampshire and Honiton in Devon via Stonehenge. Connecting the M3 and the A30, it is part of one of the main routes from London to Devon and Cornwall. It is a primary A road throughout its length, passing through five counties. The road has evolved from historical routes, some of which are thousands of years old, including the Harrow Way and the Fosse Way. The modern route was first laid out in the early 19th century as the New Direct Road, a faster coaching route from London to Exeter. It was initially in demand but fell into disuse as railways became popular from the 1840s onwards. Marston Magna (also known as Broad or Great Marston) is a village and civil parish in Somerset, England, situated north of Yeovil in the South Somerset district. The village has a population of 523. History The name Marston Magna means ''larger settlement by a marsh''. It was held as nine separate estates before the Norman Conquest. The parish was part of the hundred of Horethorne. The site of the medieval manor house survives as a moat and fish ponds south of the village. In the early 18th century the estate was held by Sir John St Barbe, 1st Baronet (d.1723) and was passed on through the families of Ashington and Sydenham of Combe, Dulverton, Somerset. Rimpton is a village and civil parish north-west of Sherborne, and north-east of Yeovil on a tributary of the River Parret in the South Somerset district of Somerset, England. History The parish of Rimpton was part of the Horethorne hundred until about 1735, and from then it was considered part of Taunton Deane hundred, although it was some distance from the rest of the hundred. The parish was part of Sherborne Poor Law Union from 1835 to 1896, although it remained part of Somerset. Sparkford
Sparkford is a village and civil parish in the South Somerset district of Somerset, England. The parish includes the village of Weston Bampfylde. It is situated near the junction of the A303 from London to Exeter and the A359 from Frome to Yeovil. In 1986 a bypass was built to take the main traffic on the A303 around the north of the village. The population is 617 mostly living along the old A303 and Church Road, which runs down to the former water mill and the church. History There is evidence for continuous occupation from Roman to Saxon times. The village is listed in the Domesday Book for Somerset as Spercheforde. It was held in 1086 by Fulwin from Walter de Douai having been held by Alwakin before the Norman conquest. Queen Camel
Queen Camel is a village and civil parish, on the River Cam and the A359 road, in the South Somerset district of Somerset, England. It is about north of Yeovil. According to the 2011 census it had a population of 908. The parish includes the hamlet of Wales. Nearby places are West Camel, Sparkford and Marston Magna. History The site of a Romano-British settlement has been identified south west of Camel Hill Farm, which was occupied in the 2nd to 4th centuries. Stone foundations of at least three buildings have been identified. The name "Camel" derives not from the animal but from "cantmael", the name of the place in the 10th century. West Camel
West Camel is a village and civil parish in south Somerset, England, about north of the town of Yeovil. It lies either side of the River Cam, just south of the A303, and has a population of 459. The parish includes the hamlet of Urgashay. Neighbouring villages include Queen Camel, and Bridgehampton. History The name "Camel" derives not from the animal, but from the name "Cantmeel", "Cantmell" or "Cantmel", by which West Camel was formerly known. "Cantmeel" itself derives from the words ''cant'' (ridge) and ''mael'' (bare). The village was also known as Camel Abbatis for its association with Muchelney Abbey.
