Chance Shot
Chance Shot (1924–1952) was an American-bred thoroughbred racehorse and sire. Bred by August Belmont, Jr. at his nursery stud in Lexington, Kentucky, he was sired by the great Fair Play, which made him a half brother to Man o' War, out of the mare Quelle Chance who was bred at Belmont's Haras de Villers stud farm in Normandy, France. He was a full brother to stakes winner and 2-time leading sire Chance Play. Trained by Pete Coyne and ridden by Earl Sande, Chance Shot was a stakes winner at 2, 3, and 4. As a two-year-old in 1926 he won the Saratoga Special Stakes and the National Stallion Stakes. At age three Chance Shot followed up an impressive win in the 1927 Withers Stakes with a victory in the Belmont Stakes. Ben Brush (1893–1918) was a champion American Thoroughbred racehorse who won the 1896 Kentucky Derby. Walter Vosburgh, for whom the Vosburgh Stakes is named, said Bramble was "a breed as tough as pine nuts." On May 6, 1896, Bramble and Roseville's son Ben Brush was the first horse to win the Kentucky Derby at its modern distance of 1¼ miles. (Since its inception in 1875, the Derby had been staged over 1½ miles, the length of the original Derby at Epsom Downs in England.) Fair Play (April 1, 1905 – December 17, 1929) was an United States, American-bred Thoroughbred horse racing, racehorse who was successful on the track, but even more so when retired to Stud (horse), stud. He is best known as the sire of Man o' War, widely considered one of the greatest American racehorses of all time. On the racetrack, Fair Play was known for his rivalry with the undefeated Colin (horse), Colin, to whom he finished second in the Belmont Stakes. Later, Fair Play was the leading sire in North America of 1920, 1924 and 1927, and the Leading broodmare sire in North America, leading broodmare sire of 1931, 1934 and 1938. He was inducted into the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame in 1956.
