Cam Calder
Campbell Gordon Calder (born 1952), known as Cam Calder, is a New Zealand doctor and politician who represented the National Party as a member of the House of Representatives from 2009 to 2014. Background Originally a dentist by trade, Calder was retraining as a doctor when he lost the sight in one eye through an accident. Calder previously served as president of the French New Zealand Business Council and has served on the international governing body for pétanque. He takes credit for being one of the people who "imported" pétanque into New Zealand. He has two children. Member of Parliament Calder was number 58 on the National Party list in the 2008 election. The provisional results of the election would have made him an MP, but the number of seats allocated to the National Party dropped by one in the final count, preventing Calder from entering Parliament. Te Whāriki, or ''Te Whāriki He whāriki mātauranga mō ngā mokopuna o Aotearoa'', is New Zealand's early years curriculum guideline. It is published by Ministry of Education, and has been recognised worldwide for its approach to early learning. The word Te Whāriki means 'woven mat' in Māori. History Following the New Zealand government's introduction of a Curriculum Framework in 1990, they began developing an early childhood curriculum. A draft was released to early childhood centres in 1993, and ''Te Whāriki'' was published in 1996 as a bi-cultural curriculum following consultation with teachers. Schools were not sent copies of the 1996 publication, which some felt led to disconnect between the early childhood and school curriculums. 2015 Sri Lankan Presidential Election
Presidential elections were held in Sri Lanka on 8 January 2015, two years ahead of schedule. The incumbent President Mahinda Rajapaksa was the United People's Freedom Alliance's candidate, seeking a third term in office. The United National Party (UNP)-led opposition coalition chose to field Maithripala Sirisena, the former Minister of Health in Rajapaksa's government and general secretary of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) – the main constituent party of the UPFA – as its common candidate. Sirisena was declared the winner after receiving 51.28% of all votes cast compared to Rajapaksa's 47.58%. The result was generally seen as a major upset. When Rajapaksa called the election in November 2014 he had looked certain to win.
