Crewed descents The first crewed descent into Calypso Deep was on 27 September 1965 by Captain Gérard Huet de Froberville, Dr. Charles “Chuck” L. Drake (USA), and Henri Germain Delauze in the French bathyscaphe ''Archimède''. Drake, Froberville, and Delauze reported a maximum depth of without a reference to the measurement accuracy. In January, 2020, Caladan Oceanic commenced its second year of deep diving with the '' DSV Limiting Factor'', piloted by Victor Vescovo. The first dives of the 2020 season commenced with dives to the French submarine '' Minerve'' in the Mediterranean Sea on 1–2 February 2020, and the second crewed descend to the Calypso Deep. Hellenic Trench
The Hellenic Trench (HT) is an oceanic trough located in the forearc of the Hellenic Arc, an arcuate archipelago on the southern margin of the Aegean Sea Plate, or Aegean Plate, also called Aegea, the basement of the Aegean Sea. The HT begins in the Ionian Sea near the mouth of the Gulf of Corinth and curves to the south, following the margin of the Aegean Sea. It passes close to the south shore of Crete and ends near the island of Rhodes just offshore Anatolia. In the classical theory of its origin the HT is an oceanic trench containing the Hellenic subduction zone, directly related to the subduction of the African Plate under the Eurasian Plate. Alternate views developed later on additional data question the classical view postulating that the HT may be the result wholly or partially of back-arc extension and slab rollback. The "partial" view hypothesizes that the western leg of the HT, Ionian Sea east to eastern Crete, exhibits the line of subduction and therefore is an ocea ...

Mediterranean Sea
The Mediterranean Sea is a sea connected to the Atlantic Ocean, surrounded by the Mediterranean Basin and almost completely enclosed by land: on the north by Western and Southern Europe and Anatolia, on the south by North Africa, and on the east by the Levant. The Sea has played a central role in the history of Western civilization. Geological evidence indicates that around 5.9 million years ago, the Mediterranean was cut off from the Atlantic and was partly or completely desiccated over a period of some 600,000 years during the Messinian salinity crisis before being refilled by the Zanclean flood about 5.3 million years ago. The Mediterranean Sea covers an area of about , representing 0.7% of the global ocean surface, but its connection to the Atlantic via the Strait of Gibraltar—the narrow strait that connects the Atlantic Ocean to the Mediterranean Sea and separates the Iberian Peninsula in Europe from Morocco in Africa—is only wide. The Mediterranean Sea e ...

On 21 December 2018, a dive by Victor Vescovo in the DSV Limiting Factor found the "true bottom" of the Atlantic Ocean to be , in the first manned descent to the deepest "verified bottom" of the Atlantic Ocean. ''Archimède'' was christened on 27 July 1961, at the French Navy base of Toulon. It was designed to go beyond , and displaced 61 tons. In October 1961, ''Archimède'' passed its first dive tests, diving to unmanned. On 27 November 1961, ''Archimède'' achieved a speed of , over a distance of at a depth of in the Mediterranean Sea.
