Calvary
Calvary ( la, Calvariae or ) or Golgotha ( grc-gre, Γολγοθᾶ, ''Golgothâ'') was a site immediately outside Jerusalem's walls where Jesus was said to have been crucified according to the canonical Gospels. Since at least the early medieval period, it has been a destination for pilgrimage. The exact location of Calvary has been traditionally associated with a place now enclosed within one of the southern chapels of the multidenominational Church of the Holy Sepulchre, a site said to have been recognized by the Roman empress Helena, mother of Constantine the Great, during her visit to the Holy Land in 325. Other locations have been suggested: in the 19th century, Protestant scholars proposed a different location near the Garden Tomb on Green Hill (now "Skull Hill") about north of the traditional site and historian Joan Taylor has more recently proposed a location about to its south-southeast. Calvary, Georgia
Calvary is a census-designated place and unincorporated community in Grady County, Georgia, United States. As of the 2010 census its population was 161. It is located along Georgia State Route 111, southwest of Cairo, the Grady County seat. Tallahassee, Florida, is to the south. Agriculture is an important part of the local economy. The top crops in the county are cotton, corn and peanuts, while chickens are overwhelmingly the most important livestock. Hurricane Michael struck the region on Wednesday, October 10, 2018, causing catastrophic damage to agriculture. History The area where Calvary is located was settled circa 1835-1836 by emigrants from Sampson County, North Carolina. Settlers claimed they chose the area after hearing claims that the soil was similar to their home county, and so would support similar crops. Calvary University is a private Christian university in Kansas City, Missouri. In 2019, total enrollment was 430, with undergraduate enrollment of 348 and graduate enrollment of 82. History The university originally opened in 1932 as Calvary Bible College. Calvary University is a result of a merger in 1961 between two small Bible colleges—Kansas City Bible College (est. 1932) and Midwest Bible College (est. 1938) in St. Louis. The two schools moved to a campus in the Kansas City suburban community of Prairie Village, Kansas, and became Calvary Bible College. In 1987, Citadel Bible College of Ozark, Arkansas merged in. Calvary was a commuter railroad station on the Chicago and North Western Railway's Milwaukee Division, today's Union Pacific North Line. The station was located at Mulford Street and Chicago Avenue, in Evanston, Illinois. Calvary was a station on the Chicago Rapid Transit Company's Evanston Line, now the Chicago Transit Authority's Purple Line (Chicago Transit Authority), Purple Line. The station was located at 400 Chicago Avenue, across from the entrance to Calvary Cemetery (Evanston, Illinois), Calvary Cemetery. The Sacred Mount Calvary of Domodossola (also known as Sacro Monte Calvario) is a Roman Catholic sanctuary on the Mattarella Hill, overlooking Domodossola (Piedmont, northern Italy). It is one of the nine Sacri Monti of Piedmont and Lombardy, included in the UNESCO World Heritage list. It was built in 1657 in response to the wishes of the Capuchin friars, Gioacchino da Cassano and Andrea da Rho. The chapels, dedicated to the Via Crucis, are positioned along a devotional route which starts on the outskirts of Domodossola and ends at the summit of Mount Mattarella. Kalwaria Zebrzydowska () is a town in southern Poland with 4,429 inhabitants (2007 estimate). As of 1999, it is situated in Lesser Poland or Małopolska (in Polish). Previously, the town was administered within the Voivodeship of Bielsko-Biała (1975–1998). Kalvarija () is a city in southwestern Lithuania, located in the Marijampolė County, close to the border with Poland.
