Members of the genus are commonly called firedot lichen, jewel lichen.Field Guide to California Lichens, Stephen Sharnoff, Yale University Press, 2014, gold lichens, "orange lichens", but they are not always orange, as in the case of '' C. albovariegata''. The distribution of this lichen genus is worldwide, extending from Antarctica to the high Arctic. It includes a portion of northern North America and the Russian High Arctic. There are about thirty species of ''Caloplaca'' in the flora of the British Isles. An example species in this genus is '' Caloplaca saxicola'', a lichen with worldwide distribution including the Antarctic continent, Europe and northern North America including the northern reaches of the Canadian boreal forests. A new species of ''Caloplaca'', '' C. obamae'', the first species to be named in honor of Barack Obama, was discovered in 2007 on Santa Rosa Island in California and ... Caloplaca Marina
''Caloplaca marina'', the orange sea lichen, is a crustose, placodioid lichen. It has wide distribution, and can be found near the shore on rocks or walls. Calos in Greek means nice, placa in Greek is shield. Caloplaca therefore means ‘beautiful patches’. Taxonomy Synonyms are ''Caloplaca marina f. flavogranulata'' Wedd., (1875); ''Caloplaca marina var. flavogranulata'' (Wedd.) Zahlbr; ''Gasparrinia marina'' (Wedd.) Hav., (1936); and ''Placodium lobulatum'' Description The vegetative body of the lichen, the thallus, is orange or orange-red in colour and may be continuous or fragmented. When fragmented the thallus looks lumpy under a hand lens; when continuous it is areolate and the margins may be ill-defined with almost no lobes; it is never powdery or pruinose. A light coloured prothallus may be visible in well-developed specimens. Apothecia An ascocarp, or ascoma (), is the fruiting body ( sporocarp) of an ascomycete phylum fungus. It consists of very tightly interwo ... [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |

Teloschistales Genera
The Teloschistales are an order of mostly lichen-forming fungi belonging to the class Lecanoromycetes in the division Ascomycota. According to one 2008 estimate, the order contains 5 families, 66 genera, and 1954 species. The predominant photobiont partners for the Teloschistales are green algae from the genera ''Trebouxia'' and '' Asterochloris''. Caloplaca Ignea
''Igneoplaca'' is a genus in the subfamily Xanthorioideae of the family Teloschistaceae. It contains a single species, the crustose lichen ''Igneoplaca ignea''. Taxonomy This species was first formally described in 1995 by Swedish lichenologist Ulf Arup, who included it in the genus '' Caloplaca''. The type specimen was collected from Cape Punta Banda in Baja California, where it was found growing on rock pavement on a south-facing slope. The specific epithet ''ignea'' (meaning "fire-red") refers to the color of the lobes, which are often orange-red at the base with paler tips – somewhat resembling flames. In 2013, Arup transferred the taxon to the new genus '' Polycauliona'' in a molecular phylogenetic-based reorganization of the Teloschistaceae. A year later, Kondratyuk and colleagues reorganized Teloschistaceae subfamily Caloplacoideae, and circumscribed genus ''Igneoplaca'' to contain the taxon. The genus is named after its species.
