Hermann Harms
Hermann August Theodor Harms (16 July 1870 – 27 November 1942) was a German taxonomist and botanist. Harms was born in Berlin. He worked as a botanist at the Berlin-Dahlem Botanical Garden and Botanical Museum, Botanical Museum in Berlin. He was a member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences. He died in Berlin, aged 52. He was longtime editor of Adolf Engler's "''Das Pflanzenreich''", and was the author of several chapters on various plant families in Engler and Carl Prantl, Prantl's "''Die Natürlichen Pflanzenfamilien''", including the chapters on Bromeliaceae (1930) and Nepenthaceae (1936). In the latter he revised the pitcher plant genus ''Nepenthes'', dividing it into three subgenera: ''Anurosperma'', ''Eunepenthes'' and ''Mesonepenthes'' (see Taxonomy of Nepenthes, Taxonomy of ''Nepenthes''). ''Calliandra'' is a genus of flowering plants in the pea family, Fabaceae, in the mimosoid clade of the subfamily Caesalpinioideae. It contains about 140 species that are native to tropical and subtropical regions of the Americas. Description The genus comprises herbaceous perennial plants, shrubs, and rarely small trees, growing tall, with bipinnate leaves. The flowers are produced in cylindrical or globose inflorescences and have numerous long slender stamens which give rise to the common names powder-puff, powder puff plant, and fairy duster. These plants flower all year round, but the best blooming is in spring and summer. They can be easily pruned. Calliandra are often fed on by caterpillars, such as the larvae of statira sulphur (''Aphrissa statira'').
