Calle Ramón Emeterio Betances (Dr. Ramón Emeterio Betances Street) is the longest urban road in Mayagüez, serving as the Main Street of Mayagüez. It corresponds with the former Post Street's south of Yagüez River section. Urban landscape The Ramón Emeterio Betances Street starts at the Barcelona Gate of the University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez (UPRM) where a flagpole is placed with the Puerto Rican flag aside a José De Diego iron bust. It states that the Recinto Universitario de Mayagüez (as UPRM is named officially in Spanish) was founded as ''Colegio de Agricultura y Artes Mecánicas (CAAM)'' by José De Diego on September 23, 1911. Ernesto Ramos Antonini
Ernesto Ramos Antonini (April 24, 1898 – January 9, 1963) was the President of the House of Representatives of Puerto Rico and co-founder of the Partido Popular Democrático de Puerto Rico (Popular Democratic Party of Puerto Rico). Early years Ramos Antonini was born into a poor family in Mayagüez, Puerto Rico. He was the youngest child of the marriage between Federico Ramos Escalera and Rosa Antonini Danseau. When he was three months old, the family moved to Ponce, Puerto Rico, where he spent the next 43 years of his life. As a child, his parents taught him the importance of getting a good education. 65th Infantry Regiment
The 65th Infantry Regiment, nicknamed "The Borinqueneers" during the Korean War for the original Taíno Indian name for Puerto Rico (Borinquen), is a Puerto Rican regiment of the United States Army. The regiment's motto is ''Honor et Fidelitas'', Latin for ''Honor and Fidelity''. The Army Appropriation Bill created by an act of Congress on 2 March 1899, authorized the creation of the first body of native troops in Puerto Rico. On 30 June 1901, the "Porto Rico Provisional Regiment of Infantry" was organized. On 1 July 1908, Congress incorporated the regiment into the Regular Army as the Puerto Rico Regiment of Infantry, United States Army. Cementerio Municipal De Mayagüez
The Cementerio Municipal de Mayagüez, also known as Cementerio Viejo, was constructed in 1876 in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico. It was designed by the municipal architect Félix Vidal d’Ors following the master plan for the city from 1804. The outskirts of the cemetery are defined by brick walls and niches, the area is divided by two streets that intersect. Following an 1872 law the cemetery provided separated areas intended for non-Catholics and for the poor, located in the east. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1988. The listing includes two contributing buildings, one contributing site, and five other contributing structures. It is one of the most elegant and carefully designed cemeteries on the island. The Asilo de Ancianos de Mayagüez, also known as Asilo De Pobres or Asilo Municipal, is the name of a historic Classical Revival style building located in downtown Mayagüez, originally as a shelter for the homeless, poor and disabled of the city. History The idea for the asylum for the poor began with a campaign to build it by Salvador Suau y Mulet when he was Mayor of Mayagüez. This building is highly representative of the 19th century institutional architecture of Puerto Rico. The building was designed and built by commissioned state architects Manuel V. Domenech and Luis Perocier in 1895. The building as it stands today however was not fully completed until 1920 due to complications caused by the 1918 earthquake, after which it was restored and expanded. The Casa Consistorial De Mayaguez, more commonly known as the Alcaldia de Mayagüez, is the city hall for the Municipality of Mayagüez. It is located in front of the Colón Main Square facing the Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria Cathedral. History The first building was built in 1845 but was destroyed by the earthquake of 1918. The original building housed the municipal offices, a jail, a telegraph station and the guard corps. The current city hall was built in 1926. Its main entrance consists of a portico and a tower with a clock. Its façade is of the neoclassical style, classified as such because of the building's Corinthian capitals and its grecoroman columns.
