Calisto MT
Calisto MT is an old style, serif typeface designed for the Monotype Corporation foundry in 1986 by Ron Carpenter, a British typographer. Calisto MT is intended to function as both a typeface for body text and display text. Its stroke contrast is minimal and it preserves an even color, especially in smaller point sizes, which contributes to its great legibility. In typography, a serif () is a small line or stroke regularly attached to the end of a larger stroke in a letter or symbol within a particular font or family of fonts. A typeface or "font family" making use of serifs is called a serif typeface (or serifed typeface), and a typeface that does not include them is sans-serif. In typography, the point is the smallest unit of measure. It is used for measuring font size, leading, and other items on a printed page. The size of the point has varied throughout printing's history. Since the 18th century, the size of a point has been between 0.18 and 0.4 millimeters. Monotype Typefaces
Monotype fonts were developed by the Monotype company. This name has been used by three firms. Two of them had their roots in "hot metal" or lead type in the printing industry. They did not adapt when the market changed as computer, offset and photographic systems became dominant. These were: * Lanston Monotype Cooperation in Philadelphia, USA * The Monotype Corporation Limited in Salfords, UK A third firm produces fonts for computer use: * Monotype Imaging Inc. The latter firm is in a sense the successor to the English Monotype factory. It has the rights to the original designs, and later obtained rights to many more designs from other sources. Palatino
Palatino is the name of an old-style serif typeface designed by Hermann Zapf, initially released in 1949 by the Stempel foundry and later by other companies, most notably the Mergenthaler Linotype Company. Named after the 16th-century Italian master of calligraphy Giambattista Palatino, Palatino is based on the humanist types of the Italian Renaissance, which mirror the letters formed by a broad nib pen reflecting Zapf's expertise as a calligrapher. Italic Type
In typography, italic type is a cursive font based on a stylised form of calligraphic handwriting. Owing to the influence from calligraphy, italics normally slant slightly to the right. Italics are a way to emphasise key points in a printed text, to identify many types of creative works, to cite foreign words or phrases, or, when quoting a speaker, a way to show which words they stressed. Roman Type
In Latin script typography, roman is one of the three main kinds of historical type, alongside blackletter and italic. Display Typeface
A display typeface is a typeface that is intended for use at large sizes for headings, rather than for extended passages of body text. Display typefaces will often have more eccentric and variable designs than the simple, relatively restrained typefaces generally used for body text. They may take inspiration from other genres of lettering, such as handpainted signs, calligraphy or an aesthetic appropriate to their use, perhaps ornamented, exotic, abstracted or drawn in the style of a different writing system. Ron Carpenter (designer)
Ron Carpenter (born 1950 in Dorking) is an English typographer. He was trained as a cartographer and later became a typeface designer. He works for independent font foundry, Dalton Maag. Early life Carpenter grew up in the village of Brockham, Surrey, as the younger of two brothers born to George and Audrey Carpenter. He attended Brockham Village School before finishing his studies at Sondes Place School. Career Out of school at the age of 16, Carpenter trained as a cartographer. His work involved the surveying for and hand drawing of Ordnance Survey maps. During this time he developed an interest in typography and obtained a job at Monotype. In 1986, Carpenter designed and developed the font, Calisto MT, an old style serif. The Calisto face is intended to function as both a text and display face.
