'' California Mail '' is a 1936 American Western film directed by Noel M. Smith and written by Roy Chanslor and Harold Buckley. The film stars Dick Foran, Linda Perry, Edmund Cobb, Milton Kibbee, Tom Brower and James Farley. The film was released by Warner Bros. on November 14, 1936. It was the fourth of 12 B-westerns Foran made for the studio over a two-year period, and is noteworthy for giving ubiquitous bit player Cobb a rare co-starring role as the chief villain. Roy Rogers makes an early, uncredited appearance as the square dance caller. Plot As the Pony Express era is ending, Pony Express rider Bill Harkins, a resident of Gold Creek, is told by his father, Sam Harkins, that the government is terminating their contract, in favor of offering bids to stage coach lines. Bill and Roy Banton are both wooing Mary Tolliver. Three bids are received in Dodge City, including Harkins' and Banton's. Fred Burns (actor)
Fred Burns (April 24, 1878 – July 18, 1955) was an American actor who mainly appeared in Western films. He appeared in over 265 films before his death in 1955. Biography Fred Burns was born on April 24, 1878, in Fort Keogh, Montana. For six years, he was in charge of Buffalo Bill Cody's ranch near Cheyenne, Wyoming. He " broke" wild mustangs for Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show. He traveled with Buffalo Bill's Wild West show, and later with the 101 Ranch Wild West Show. Burns was a roping champion for five years in the early 1900s. By 1916, he had moved to Hollywood to work in movies full-time. He appeared in 23 movies between 1921 and 1930, and 91 movies during the sound era. He also was in charge of the stock at Fine Arts Studios. Burns died in Los Angeles, California, on July 18, 1955, at age 77. Bob Woodward (March 5, 1909 – February 7, 1972) was an American actor of film and television. Best known for his role in ''The Range Rider'' (1951–1953). George Glenn Strange (August 16, 1899 – September 20, 1973) was an American actor who mostly appeared in Western films and was billed as Glenn Strange. He is best remembered for playing Frankenstein's monster in three Universal films during the 1940s and for his role as Sam Noonan, the bartender on CBS's ''Gunsmoke'' television series.
