California International Marathon
The California International Marathon (CIM) is an annual road marathon () held in Northern California since 1983. The net downhill course starts at Folsom Dam and ends at the State Capitol in Sacramento. The race is organized by the Sacramento Running Association. History In 1983, marathoner John Mansoor and entrepreneur Sally Edwards organized the first CIM, anticipating an opportunity to also be an Olympic Marathon Trials qualifier. CIM served as the United States National Marathon Championship for men in 1984 and for women in 1984, 1985, 1989, and 1993. It again served as the USA Marathon Championship in 2017 and 2018. In 1988, Sacramento artist Phil Dynan became the first official race artist appointed by the CIM Board of Directors. Dynan's art was used for five years. His initial design showed a pack of runners with the Sierra foothills behind them. Folsom, California
Folsom is a city in Sacramento County, California, United States. It is commonly known for Folsom State Prison, the song "Folsom Prison Blues" by Johnny Cash, as well as for Folsom Lake. The population was 80,454 at the 2020 census. Folsom is part of the Sacramento−Arden-Arcade− Roseville Metropolitan Statistical Area. History Folsom is named for Joseph Libbey Folsom who purchased Rancho Rio de los Americanos from the heirs of San Francisco merchant William Alexander Leidesdorff, and laid out the town called Granite City, mostly occupied by gold miners seeking their fortune in the Sierra Nevada foothills. Though few amassed a great deal of wealth, the city prospered due to Joseph Folsom's lobbying to get a railway to connect the town with Sacramento. Joseph died in 1855, and Granite City was later renamed Folsom in his honor. Peter Maher (athlete)
Peter Kevin Maher (born March 30, 1960 in Ottawa, Ontario) is a former Canadian marathon runner who competed mainly in the 1990s. He was a resident of Thornhill, a suburb of Toronto. He was credited for a brief period with the world record time for 25 km. Maher represented Canada in the Olympic men's marathons in Seoul, 1988 and Barcelona, 1992. He is said to be the originator of the quote "Running is a big question mark that's there each and every day. It asks you, 'Are you going to be a wimp or are you going to be strong today." Maher also now runs a Sports Therapy Clinic in Carrigaline, Cork, Ireland. Christa Vahlensieck
Christa Vahlensieck (née Kofferschläger; born 27 May 1949) is a German former long distance runner and pioneer in the marathon for women. During her running career, from 1973-1989, she simultaneously achieved a world record in the 10,000 metres, in the 25k road race and the marathon; she holds 17 German champion titles. Biography On 28 October 1973, Vahlensieck became the first German woman to complete the marathon in under three hours (2:59:26), as a youth in a German Forestrun. She set another German record (2:53:00) at the Boston Marathon on 15 April 1974. Both times were also European bests. In the same year, she won the Essen Marathon in 2:42:38. Nancy Jane Ditz (born June 25, 1954 in San Jose, California) is a former American long-distance runner who is a United States national champion in the marathon. Ditz competed in the marathon at the 1988 Summer Olympics. In her debut marathon, Ditz won the 1982 San Francisco Marathon (2:44:34). Gabriela "Gaby" Andersen-Schiess (born 20 May 1945 in Zürich) is a former Swiss long-distance runner who participated in the first women's Olympic marathon at the 1984 Summer Olympics. Though living in Sun Valley, Idaho, and working as a ski instructor at the time, Andersen-Schiess represented Switzerland in the 1984 Los Angeles Games.
