Caleta Chaihuín
Caleta Chaihuín (Chaihuín) is a coastal hamlet ( es, caserío) and rural district in the commune of Corral, Los Ríos Region, Chile. It lies at the mouth of Chaihuín River that flows from the Valdivian Coast Range to the Pacific Ocean. Silt from the river combined with the prevailing coastal current have formed a barrier-bar across the cove creating an estuary. The administration and main entrance to the Valdivian Coastal Reserve lies in Chaihuín. History The indigenous inhabitants of the area are Huilliche people. During the early 1970s Chaihuín was considered a hot-bed of the Revolutionary Left Movement (MIR), but with limited actual anti-government activity. Los Ríos Region
The Los Ríos Region (Spanish: ''Región de Los Ríos'', , ''Region of the Rivers'') is one of Chile's 16 regions, the country's first-order administrative divisions. Its capital is Valdivia. It began to operate as a region on October 2, 2007, having been created by subdividing the Los Lagos Region in southern Chile. Huilliche People
The Huilliche , Huiliche or Huilliche-Mapuche are the southern partiality of the Mapuche macroethnic group of Chile. Located in the Zona Sur, they inhabit both Futahuillimapu ("great land of the south") and, as the Cunco subgroup, the north half of Chiloé Island. The Huilliche are the principal indigenous people of those regions.Villalobos ''et al''. 1974, p. 49. According to Ricardo E. Latcham the term Huilliche started to be used in Spanish after the second founding of Valdivia in 1645, adopting the usage of the Mapuches of Araucanía for the southern Mapuche tribes. Revolutionary Left Movement (Chile)
The Revolutionary Left Movement ( es, Movimiento de Izquierda Revolucionaria, MIR) is a Chilean far-left Marxist-Leninist communist party and former urban guerrilla organization founded on 12 October 1965. At its height in 1973, the MIR numbered about 10,000 members and associates. The group emerged from various student organizations, mainly from University of Concepción (led by Miguel Enríquez), that had originally been active in the youth organization of the Socialist Party. Valdivian Coastal Reserve
Valdivian Coastal Reserve is a natural reserve located in the Cordillera Pelada, in Los Ríos Region of Chile, near Corral. History In 2003, the WWF Chile program, The Nature Conservancy (TNC) and other local organizations acquired a nearly 60,000 hectare property that had been the subject of intensive forest controversies in the 1990s and early 2000s due to the conversion of native forests to eucalyptus plantations grown for paper pulp. The Valdivian Coastal Reserve was inaugurated on 22 March 2005. A further 10,000 hectares were donated to the Chilean state in 2012 in order to create the new Coastal Alerce National Park according to the plans laid out by the reserve's founding organizations in coordination with the National Forestry Corporation (CONAF for its Spanish acronym). An estuary is a partially enclosed coastal body of brackish water with one or more rivers or streams flowing into it, and with a free connection to the open sea.
