Caldy Rugby Football Club
Caldy Rugby Football Club is an English rugby union team which play in the Championship, the second tier of English rugby, following their promotion from National League 1 at the end of 2021-22. Their home stadium is Paton Field in Thurstaston. On 23 April 2022 Caldy reached the highest level in the club's history when they beat title rivals Sale 13–9 in front of a crowd of 3,000 at Paton Field to win National League 1 and gain promotion to the RFU Championship (tier 2) for the 2022–23 season. Cheshire Rugby Football Union
The Cheshire Rugby Football Union (CRFU) is a rugby union governing body in the historic county of Cheshire and the Isle of Man. The union is the constituent body of the Rugby Football Union (RFU) for Cheshire. Lancs/Cheshire Division One
Lancs/Cheshire Division 1 (usually referred to as Lancs/Cheshire 1) was a regional English Rugby Union league for teams from Cheshire, Merseyside, Lancashire and Greater Manchester, ranked at tier 8 of the English league system. The top two clubs are promoted to North 2 West and the bottom two clubs are relegated to Lancs/Cheshire 2. Each season two teams from Lancs/Cheshire 1 are picked to take part in the RFU Senior Vase (a national competition for clubs at level 8) - one affiliated with the Cheshire RFU, the other with the Lancashire RFU. The division was initially known as North-West West 1 when it was created in 1987, and had a number of different names since with South Lancs/Cheshire 1 being the longest running. Sam Dickinson
Samuel Mark Dickinson (born 28 January 1985) is an English rugby union player who left Premiership side Northampton Saints at the end of the 2016/17 season. He began his career at hometown club Caldy before moving to Rotherham Titans in 2009. He plays in the back row but has also spent time at lock. At international level he has represented the England Saxons. Club career Dickinson was born in Manchester and began his career at Caldy. He joined Rotherham Titans in 2009 and played 63 times before moving to Northampton Saints three years later. He broke his arm days after agreeing to move to Saints and eventually made his debut against Exeter Chiefs in September 2013, over 18 months after signing. Stuart Turner (born 22 April 1972 in Southport, Merseyside, England) was a rugby union player for Sale Sharks in the Guinness Premiership. Gavin Kerr
Gavin Kerr is a retired rugby union footballer who played prop, he played international rugby for Scotland. He played club rugby for Leeds Tykes (now Leeds Carnegie), the defunct Border Reivers, Edinburgh and Sale Sharks. He played both sides of the scrum. During his time at Leeds he helped them win the 2004–05 Powergen Cup, the final of which he started. He debuted for Scotland in the February 2003 game against Ireland but became a regular starter for Scotland after his solid performance against New Zealand in the Autumn Test series, replacing Tom Smith after his retirement. In April 2009 it was announced that Kerr will play for English club Sale Sharks in the Guinness Premiership. He signed a two-year deal keeping him at the Stockport based club for the 2009–10 and 2010–11 seasons. On 18 August 2010, Kerr announced he would retire from rugby due to a neck injury. Chris Bentley (rugby Union)
Chris Bentley (born 24 May 1987) is an English former rugby union footballer previously of Exeter Chiefs in Premiership Rugby. His position of choice was right sided Lock. After starting his senior career at New Brighton he gained the chance to play for Orrell following a suspension to club stalwart Chas Cusuani. He went on to play 128 first team games (including a record 64 consecutive 1st XV starts), leaving when the club owner Dave Whelan withdrew financial support. After a brief stint with Biarritz Olympique Pays Basque in the south of France, he joined the Exeter Chiefs for one of two stints that accrued 126 first XV appearances. Ben Johnston (rugby Union)
Ben Johnston (born 8 November 1978 in Clatterbridge, Bebington, Merseyside) is an English rugby union footballer who currently coaches and occasionally plays at centre for Old Georgians R.F.C. in Surrey Counties League. Johnston started his professional career at Saracens in 1998. His form in his first couple of seasons led to selection for the Tour of South Africa in 2000. Whilst he did not feature in a Test, he did play in a tour match against the Gauteng Falcons. Johnston was selected for the 2002 tour of Argentina, making his debut against Los Pumas. 2019–20 National League 2 North
The 2019–20 National League 2 North was the eleventh season (33rd overall) of the fourth tier (north) of the English domestic rugby union competitions since the professionalised format of the second division was introduced. On 22 February Scunthorpe were the first side to be relegated after suffering a massive 109–12 defeat against Chester, going down with eight games still to play. Although it was a miserable season on the pitch for Scunthorpe, comfortably the weakest side in the division in terms of results, the loss of their player James Walker, who died earlier in the season was a far keener felt blow. On 7 March Caldy became champions with a resounding 49–5 win away to relegation threatened Preston Grasshoppers to seal an instant return to National League 1 and claim their second National League 2 North title. 2016–17 National League 2 North
The 2016–17 National League 2 North is the eighth season (30th overall) of the fourth tier (north) of the English domestic rugby union competitions since the professionalised format of the second division was introduced. New teams to the division include Wharfedale who were relegated from National League 1 while Sheffield Tigers were promoted as champions of National League 3 North along with Scunthorpe (champions) and Hinckley (play-off) from National League 3 Midlands. Caldy were crowned champions on the 8 April 2017 with two games to go, after beating second place Sale 28–26 in front of a crowd of 1,432 at Paton Field (the biggest in the league that season) to make sure that the Heywood Road side could not catch them. National League 2 North
National League 2 North is one of three, level four leagues in the English rugby union system and provides semi-professional competition for teams in the northern half of England, the North. The remainder of England is covered by the two counterpart leagues National League 2 East and National League 2 West. The champion club is promoted to National One. Relegation is to either the Regional 1 Midlands or North Premier leagues, depending on where the teams are based. Hull are the current champions. Before September 2009, it was known as National Division Three North. From 2009 to 2010 the Rugby Football Union (RFU) expanded the league from fourteen to sixteen teams. Each team played thirty league games on a home and away basis. The 2019–20 season ended before all the matches were completed because of the coronavirus pandemic and the RFU used a best playing record formula to decide the final table. National League 3 North
North Premier was a level five league in the English rugby union system, with the fourteen teams drawn from across Northern England. The other leagues at this level were London & South East Premier, Midlands Premier and South West Premier. The RFU reorganised the level five leagues for season 2022–23, with an increase from four to six and reducing the teams in each from fourteen to twelve. The teams in this league now play in either Regional 1 North East or Regional 1 North West. Format The fourteen teams in this league were drawn from across northern England with the champions promoted to National League 2 North and the runner-up going into a play-off with the second placed team from Midlands Premier with the winner also being promoted.
