Calallen
Calallen ( ) is a former town that existed until the 1960s. Today, Calallen is an outlying portion of the larger city of Corpus Christi, Texas, Corpus Christi. It is located in Nueces County, in the Coastal Bend region of Texas. It is bound to the north by the Nueces River, which also marks the boundary between Nueces County and San Patricio County, Texas, San Patricio County. History The community was named for Calvin Joseph “Cal” Allen (18591922), a noted rancher who was born and raised about three miles up the Nueces River from the future townsite. He established a spread where he herded wild cattle and cultivated his herds. He was among the first to bring fine-blooded stock into South Texas for the improvement of beef brands. The ''New Encyclopedia of Texas'' (1929) described Allen as "one of the most beloved characters of the old Southwest." Calallen High School
Calallen High School is a public high school serving grades 9–12. The school is located in the Calallen Independent School District in northwest Corpus Christi, Texas, United States. Background Calallen's name comes from Calvin Joseph (Cal) Allen (1859–1922), a prominent early rancher. Allen owned a cattle ranch on which the Calallen Independent School District is now located. Allen donated land to the St. Louis, Brownsville and Mexico Rail Line as right-of-way; in exchange, the railroad agreed to place a depot on Allen's property. Allen then subdivided the land adjacent to the depot and established a townsite there. The town was named Calvin until it was discovered that another community in Texas already had that name. Phil Danaher (American Football)
Philip C. Danaher (born November 23, 1948) is a Texas high school football coach. He is the head football coach at Calallen High School in Corpus Christi, Texas, and is one of only three Texas coaches to reach 400 career wins. Danaher was born in Missouri but shortly afterwards his family moved to south Texas. He played high school football at Harlingen High School, graduated in 1967 and received a football scholarship from Angelo State University. Danaher received his Bachelor of Science in physical education in August 1971. He then became assistant coach at 5A Edison High School in San Antonio. In 1974 Danaher got his first head coaching job in Dilley, Texas, a class 2A school. During his first year, the Wolves won their first district championship in more than a decade and were named regional co-champions. The district has approximately 4,000 students and operates four elementary schools, a middle school, and a high school. Mathis, Texas
Mathis is a city in San Patricio County, Texas, United States. The population was 4,942 at the 2010 census. History In 1887, when the San Antonio and Aransas Pass Railroad was laying tracks across San Patricio County, Thomas H. Mathis received naming rights when he donated for a townsite and school. Mathis and his brother J. M. Mathis, held in the vicinity. The brothers had dropped out of the Coleman, Mathis, Fulton Cattle Company in 1879. Thomas Mathis owned an additional around Mathis and built a fence enclosing the town. As late as 1906, Mathis was enclosed and arriving and departing trains had to be let in and out.
