Calabash Brothers
''Calabash Brothers'' or ''Hulu Brothers'' () is a Chinese animation TV series produced by Shanghai Animation Film Studio and directed by Hu Jinqing, Ge Guiyun, and Zhou Keqin. It was extremely popular when it aired on TV in 1986–1987. Names The series can be variously translated as ''Calabash Brothers'', ''Hulu Brothers'', ''Gourd Brothers'', ''Seven Brothers'' or ''Pumpkin Brothers''. In China, the series is popularly known as ''Huluwa'' (). Background In the 1980s the series was one of the most popular animations in China. While it has been praised as much as Havoc in Heaven domestically, it was released at a point when the Chinese animation industry was in a relatively downed state compared to that of the rest of the international community. Hu Jinqing
Hu Jinqing (; March 1936 – 13 May 2019) was a Chinese animator and film director, and a pioneer in adapting the traditional art of Chinese paper cutting to animation. His film '' The Fight Between the Snipe and the Clam'' won the Silver Bear for Best Short Film at the 1984 Berlin International Film Festival. He co-directed the 1980s animated television series ''Calabash Brothers'' and created the Hulu (Calabash) Babies, which have become some of the most popular animated characters in China. Life and career Hu was born in March 1936 in Changzhou, Jiangsu, Republic of China. He joined the Shanghai Animation Film Studio in the 1950s as a young artist. In 1958, he assisted Wan Guchan, a founder of China's animation industry, in making the first-ever Chinese paper cutting animation film, ''Pigsy Eats Watermelon''. ''My Time at Portia'' is a video game developed by Chinese studio Pathea Games and published by Team17 for Microsoft Windows, macOS, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in 2019. An Android and iOS version was released in early August 2021. It combines aspects of role-playing video games and simulation games. Plot The game takes place long after civilization has been destroyed, where humans have emerged from underground and begun rebuilding society. The player is cast in the role of the child of a famous builder, who inherits their father's workshop in the independent city state of Portia after he goes travelling.
