Mary Cairncross Reserve
The Mary Cairncross Reserve is a conservation park located on the Blackall Range east of Maleny, in the Sunshine Coast Region, Queensland, Australia. Maleny is approximately north of Brisbane and west of Caloundra. The reserve is positioned in the mountain rainforests of the Maleny region overlooking the Glass House Mountains. Geology The Region holds many of the large predominate landforms in Queensland, the most recognisable is the Glass House Mountains. The Glass House Mountains were formed thousands of years ago when the outer layer of soil and rock eroded from the extinct volcanic summit. The dirt and soil located in the region is very rich and healthy, due to the high quantity of volcanic rock decomposed in the soil. Volcanic rock contains high amounts of nutrients. History The Cairncross Reserve was given to the Landsborough Shire Council in 1941 by three Thynne sisters. They named the reserve after their mother, Mary Thynne (née Cairncross, born in 1848). Cairncross Dockyard
The Cairncross Dockyard was a shipyard beside the Brisbane River at Morningside, City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. It included one of Australia's largest graving docks with an 8.5 metre deep water access, capable of taking Panamax vessels of up to 85,000 dwt, up to 263 metres long x 33.5 metres wide. It is second in size only to the Royal Australian Navy's Captain Cook Graving Dock in Sydney. Construction of the dockyard began in 1942, and its graving dock opened in 1944. The dockyard closed in 2014, and the land on which it stands is to be sold for residential and commercial redevelopment. History The bombing of Darwin in February 1942 during World War II created an urgent need to increase Australia's capacity to service large naval and merchant ships. The South Brisbane dockyards (built in the 1880s) were too small to accommodate many modern ships plus the construction of the Story Bridge impacted on the access to that dockyard. A larger dockyard downstream of th ...

Cairncross, Angus
Tarfside is a small hamlet in Angus, Scotland. It is situated in Glen Esk, on the upper course of the River North Esk, around 8 miles north of Edzell, and has a footpath to nearby Loch Lee. Tarfside is commonly seen as a very beautiful place for walkers. Tarfside is the location of an Episcopal church, St Drostan's, which was built in 1879 in memory of Alexander Penrose Forbes, Bishop of Brechin. This replaced earlier Episcopal meeting houses in Glen Esk. The church has had no resident clergyman since 1921 and is currently served from Brechin. The church also has a lodge which provides accommodation for groups or individuals. During the Second World War, a secret Auxiliary Unit known as the "Tarfside Patrol" was based in the area. This was led by Sgt W.D. Kidd, who reported to the Group Commander Captain H.A. Ferrier, and Asst G.C. Lieut A.J. Mackie. An underground base would have been made which the patrol would have gone into hiding if the Germans had invaded. Research by th ...
