Caird And Company
Caird & Company was a Scottish shipbuilding and engineering firm based in Greenock. The company was established in 1828 by John Caird when he received an order to re-engine River Clyde, Clyde paddle-tugs. John's relative James Tennant Caird joined the company in 1831, and after leaving to work for Randolph, Elder & Co in Glasgow, rejoined the family business for good in 1838. A year after the death of Robert Caird, the company was sold to Harland & Wolff Ltd in 1916 for £432,493. The firm continued trading as a separate enterprise, with Arthur and Patrick Caird on the board, until 1922. The Arthur Street engine works was sold to John G. Kincaid & Company in 1919. RMS ''Arabia'' was a P&O ocean liner. She was sunk in the Mediterranean in 1916 by a German U-boat during World War I. History Caird & Company built ''Arabia'' at Greenock on the River Clyde, launching her in November 1897 and completing her in March 1898. She had capacity for 317 first class and 152 second class passengers, a total of 469. ''Arabia''s route was between Tilbury, Essex and Bombay. On her maiden voyage she took Lord Kedleston to take up his post as Viceroy of India. In 1902 she took passengers to India for the 1903 Delhi Durbar. On 15 March 1905 the cargo steamship was manœuvreing in Bombay Harbour when she struck ''Arabia'' amidships on her port side, damaging the liner's promenade deck, boat deck and upper works. John Caird DD LLD (1820–1898) was a Scottish theologian. He entered the Church of Scotland, of which he became one of the most eloquent preachers. He served as the Principal of the University of Glasgow from 1873 until 1898. Life He was born at 24 Nicholson Street in Greenock on 15 December 1820, the son of John Caird of Caird and Co. and Janet Young. His younger brother was Edward Caird. He was educated at Greenock Grammar School, and then attended the University of Glasgow graduating MA in 1845. Edward Caird (; 23 March 1835 – 1 November 1908) was a Scottish philosopher. He was a holder of LLD, DCL, and DLitt. Life The younger brother of the theologian John Caird, he was the son of engineer John Caird, the proprietor of Caird & Company, born at Greenock in Renfrewshire, and educated at Greenock Academy and the Universities of Glasgow and Oxford (B.A. 1863). He was a Fellow and Tutor of Merton College from 1864 to 1866. In 1866, he was appointed to the Chair of Moral Philosophy at Glasgow, which he held until 1893. In that year he became Master of Balliol College, from which he retired in 1907. In 1894 he was made an Honorary Fellow of Merton College. The P class, nominally described as "patrol boats", was in effect a class of British coastal sloops. Twenty-four ships to this design were ordered in May 1915 (numbered ''P.11'' to ''P.34'') and another thirty between February and June 1916 (numbered ''P.35'' to ''P.64'') under the Emergency War Programme for the Royal Navy in the First World War, although ten of the latter group were in December 1916 altered on the stocks before launch for use as decoy Q-ships and were renumbered as PC-class sloops. ''Gouverneur Generaal Loudon'' was a mail steamer and excursion vessel which survived the 1883 eruption of Krakatoa. Ship history The ship was built by Caird & Company of Greenock, Scotland, in 1875 and operated by the ''Nederlandsch Indische Stoomboot Maatschappij'' ("Netherlands Indies Steamship Company") until 1891, when the assets and business of the company was taken over by the ''Koninklijke Paketvaart-Maatschappij'' ("Royal Packet Navigation Company").
