Cabrillo Handicap
The Cabrillo Handicap was an American Thoroughbred horse race run annually at Del Mar Racetrack in Del Mar, California from 1966 through 1990. Open to horses age three and older, the Grade 3 event was raced on dirt. Contested at various distances, in its final years it was set at a mile and one-eighth (nine furlongs) The race was won by such top horses as Cougar II, Kennedy Road, Proud Birdie, Gato Del Sol, Ferdinand, and Precisionist. The Cabrillo Handicap was run in two divisions in 1966. Del Mar Racetrack
The Del Mar Fairgrounds is a event venue in Del Mar, California. The annual San Diego County Fair is held here, which was called the Del Mar Fair from 1984 to 2001. In 1936, the Del Mar Racetrack was built by the Thoroughbred Club with founding member Bing Crosby providing leadership. The Fairgrounds is owned by the State of California and is managed by the 22nd District Agricultural Association, a state agency that hosts more than 300 annual events. Its staff organizes four major annual events, including the annual San Diego County Fair, and runs Surfside Race Place, the year-round satellite horse racing facility. The Del Mar Thoroughbred Club leases the facilities for their live meets each year. Gato Del Sol
Gato Del Sol (February 23, 1979 – August 7, 2007) was an American Thoroughbred racehorse best known for his win in the 1982 Kentucky Derby. Background Gato Del Sol was a gray horse foaled at Stone Farm in Paris, Kentucky. He was sired by the Chilean horse Cougar, who enjoyed his greatest success in North America and was inducted into the U.S. Racing Hall of Fame. His dam Peacefully also produced the Prix Morny winner Tersa and was distantly related to the Melbourne Cup winner Beldale Ball. Gato Del Sol was owned and bred by Stone Farm proprietor Arthur B. Hancock III in partnership with one of his longtime clients, Manhattan real estate broker Leone J. Peters. The two men also bred Risen Star, winner of the 1988 Preakness and Belmont Stakes. Ferdinand (horse)
Ferdinand (March 12, 1983 – 2002) was a champion Thoroughbred racehorse who won the 1986 Kentucky Derby and 1987 Breeders' Cup Classic and was the 1987 Horse of the Year. He entered stud in 1989 and was later sold to a breeding farm in Japan in 1994. Much to the outrage of many horse racing enthusiasts, reports indicate that in 2002, Ferdinand was sent to slaughter in Japan with no fanfare or notice to previous owners. He likely became either pet food or steaks for human consumption. Ferdinand's death was the catalyst for the Ferdinand Fee, an optional donation program to fund keeping old racehorses alive, and Friends of Ferdinand, a nonprofit group formed in 2005 with the goal of transitioning retired racehorses into second careers. In September 2006, the United States House of Representatives approved H.R. 503, the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act, which would ban the slaughter of horses in the United States. Proud Birdie
Proud Birdie (1973–2003) was an American Thoroughbred racehorse best known for his upset win in the G1 Marlboro Cup Invitational Handicap. Bred in Florida, he was sired by 1967 Kentucky Derby winner Proud Clarion and out of the mare Bernie Bird, a daughter of the speedy Del Mar Derby winner, Bolero. Racing career Proud Birdie was purchased for $21,000 by A. Douglas Henderson's Marablue Farm of Reddick, Florida at the 1975 Ocala Breeders' Sales Company auction of two-year-olds in training. Raced by Marablue Farm, Proud Birdie was trained by Rosemary Lepera and then Hall of Fame inductee, James Maloney who said his greatest thrill in racing was Proud Bertie's win in the Marlboro Cup. Del Mar, California
Del Mar (; Spanish for "Of the Sea") is a beach town in San Diego County, California, located on the coast of the Pacific Ocean. Established in 1885 as a seaside resort, the city incorporated in 1959. The Del Mar Horse Races are hosted on the Del Mar racetrack every summer. In 1885, Colonel Jacob Taylor purchased from Enoch Talbert, with visions of building a seaside resort for the rich and famous. Kennedy Road (horse)
Kennedy Road (April 18, 1968 – December 15, 1995) was a Canadian Thoroughbred Champion racehorse who dominated Canadian racing for three years before going to success in California. Background He was bred by Canadian mining magnate Arthur W. Stollery at his Angus Glen Farm in Markham, Ontario, and raced under his wife Helen's name. Racing career 1970-1972 Canadian career After his two-year-old racing season in which he was voted the Canadian 2-Year-old Champion, Kennedy Road underwent an operation to remove a bone fragment from a hind ankle. His injury did not affect his racing ability, and in 1971 he won Canada's most prestigious race, the Queen's Plate, then was voted that year's Canadian 3-Year-old Champion.
