Tony Castro
Tony Castro (full name Antonio Maria de Lancastre de Mello e Castro), Conde das Antas, Conde da Lousa, Visconde de Pernes, born 1952, is a yacht designer, known for numerous winning designs. Born in Lisbon, Portugal, he has been designing sailing and motor yachts since about 1980, with more than 10,000 boats launched, ranging from custom boats and one-design production models to superyachts. His design firm is based in Hamble-le-Rice, England. Career As a Chartered Engineer, his first job came about when it was discovered that Denis Doyle's yacht ''Moonduster'' was floating above her 'marks', having been built less heavily than had been intended her designer, Germán Frers. Castro advised that lead be attached to the underside of the coachroof and had a hole drilled in the keel to reduce her stability, which gave the vessel an exceptionally good handicap for a boat of her size. The winged keel is a sailboat keel layout first fitted on the 12-metre class yacht ''Australia II'', 1983 America's Cup winner. Design This layout was adopted by Ben Lexcen, designer of ''Australia II''. Although Ben Lexcen "had tried the winged keel idea before",Bruce Stannard, ''Ben lexcen, the man, the keel and the cup'', Faber and Faber, 1984, there is conjecture that it was computed and designed by a Dutch aerodynamicist at the Wageningen towing tank (Netherlands Ship Model Bassin). Wings The lateral wings of Australia II are of moderate aspect ratio, forming a nearly horizontal foil, the "wing", at the bottom to provide additional effective span, in the same way as the winglets on an aircraft. Each wing acts as a winglet, effectively increasing the keel aspect ratio therefore reducing the lift-induced drag. The Alberg 30 is a Canadian sailboat, that was designed by Carl Alberg and first built in 1962. The Alberg 30 incorporates design elements from the similar Alberg Odyssey 30 of two years earlier. Production The boat was built by Whitby Boat Works in Canada, who completed more than 700 examples between 1962 and 1987, but it is now out of production. Construction was changed during the production run. Early models have a laminated wood mast brace and no liner, with a masonite-cored deck that drains overboard via the toe rail. Later models feature an aluminum mast brace inside a molded fiberglass liner, balsa-cored decks that drain through cockpit scupper drain hoses.
