Clubul Sportiv Municipal Focșani, commonly known as CSM Focșani, is a men's handball club from Focșani, Vrancea County, Romania Romania ( ; ro, România ) is a country located at the crossroads of Central Europe, Central, Eastern Europe, Eastern, and Southeast Europe, Southeastern Europe. It borders Bulgaria to the south, Ukraine to the north, Hungary to the west, S ..., that plays in the Liga Națională. The club promoted for the very first time in the Liga Națională in 2015. At the end of the 2017–18 season the club managed to avoid relegation and finished on the 10th place. CSM plays its home matches in the Sala Sporturilor "Vrancea", a sports hall which was built in 1975 with a capacity of 1,400 people. The Romanian Handball League, commonly known as Liga Națională or more recently as Liga Zimbrilor, is the men's top Romanian professional Team handball, handball league. The league comprises fourteen teams. History This sport was first played in Romania in 1920. After a visit in Germany, a few physical education teachers introduced this sport in their classes. The ''Liga Națională'' was founded in 1933 (in 11 players) and in 1958 in the current format with 7 players. Handball (also known as team handball, European handball or Olympic handball) is a team sport in which two teams of seven players each (six outcourt players and a goalkeeper) pass a ball using their hands with the aim of throwing it into the goal of the other team. A standard match consists of two periods of 30 minutes, and the team that scores more goals wins. Modern handball is played on a court of , with a goal in the middle of each end. Focșani (; yi, פֿאָקשאַן, Fokshan) is the capital city of Vrancea County in Romania on the banks the river Milcov, in the historical region of Moldavia. It has a population () of 79,315. Geography Focșani lies at the foot of the Curvature Carpathians, at a point of convergence for tectonic geologic faults, which raises the risk of earthquakes in the vicinity. Though Vrancea County is one of the most popular wine-producing regions in Romania, Odobești being just to the northwest, in Romania, Focșani itself is not considered a wine-producing center.
