Steaua București (Basketball) is the basketball section of CSA Steaua București sport club, based in Bucharest, Romania. The club competes in Liga Națională, the top tier of Romanian basketball. Being part of one of Romania's biggest sports clubs, famous especially for its football team, Steaua's basketball club enjoyed plenty of success over the years, but also disappointments. Many of the last few years have been spent in the second division, including the previous season. In 2008, BC Steaua merged with BC Targoviste, thus changing its name again, this time to , and taking over Târgoviște's place in the Liga Națională. The Liga Națională Baschet de Masculin (LNBM) () is the top-tier professional basketball league of Romania. Founded in 1950, the winner of the league is crowned the Romanian national champion. Currently, the league consists of 24 teams playing in three different divisions. The most successful club in the league's history is Dinamo București, who has won a record 22 titles. The clubs from the Liga Națională also participate in the European competitions, as they can qualify for the Basketball Champions League or the FIBA Europe Cup based on their performance in the national league and cup competition. Constantin Herold (4 February 1912 – 28 August 1984) was a Romanian multi-sport athlete that practiced through his career 14 sports. He was mostly known for his activity in basketball, where he was a player and coach. On 17 June 2005, he received post-mortem the Honorary Citizen of Moreni title. The 2017–18 FIBA Europe Cup was the third season of the FIBA Europe Cup, a European professional basketball competition for clubs that was launched by FIBA. The 2017–18 Liga Națională season was the 68th season of the Liga Națională, the highest professional basketball league in Romania. U-BT Cluj-Napoca were the defending champion.
