Chloride channel protein 2 is a protein that in humans is encoded by the ''CLCN2'' gene. Mutations of this gene have been found to cause leukoencephalopathy and Idiopathic generalised epilepsy (), although the latter claim has been disputed. CLCN2 contains a transmembrane region that is involved in chloride ion transport as well two intracellular copies of the CBS domain. CBS Domain
In molecular biology, the CBS domain is a protein domain found in a range of proteins in all species from bacteria to humans. It was first identified as a conserved sequence region in 1997 and named after cystathionine beta synthase, one of the proteins it is found in. CBS domains are also found in a wide variety of other proteins such as inosine monophosphate dehydrogenase, voltage gated chloride channels and AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK). CBS domains regulate the activity of associated enzymatic and transporter domains in response to binding molecules with adenosyl groups such as AMP and ATP, or s-adenosylmethionine. Generalised Epilepsy
Generalized epilepsy is a form of epilepsy characterised by generalised seizures with no apparent cause. Generalized seizures, as opposed to focal seizures, are a type of seizure that impairs consciousness and distorts the electrical activity of the whole or a larger portion of the brain (which can be seen, for example, on electroencephalography, EEG). Generalized seizure occurs due to abnormalities in both hemispheres. Generalized epilepsy is ''primary'' because the epilepsy is the originally diagnosed condition itself, as opposed to ''secondary'' epilepsy, which occurs as a symptom of a diagnosed condition.
