It airs a French-language contemporary hit radio format and is owned and operated by Cogeco. The studios are in Place Bonaventure at 800 rue de la Gauchetière ouest in Montreal. CKOI-FM is a Class C1 station. Its transmitter is on Mount Royal with an effective radiated power (ERP) of 148,000 watts using an omnidirectional antenna. Until 2018, it was one of North America's highest-powered FM stations. History Early years The station's original call sign was CKVL-FM, sister station to CKVL 850 AM. Both stations were located in Verdun, a community just outside Montreal. They identified their city of license as Verdun until 2002. CKOI was a network of French-language adult top 40 outlets broadcasting throughout the province of Quebec. Created by Corus Québec on November 6, 2009, the network and its stations are currently owned and operated by Cogeco. The name of the network is derived from the call sign of its flagship station in Montreal, CKOI-FM. The name "CKOI" is pronounced like a word—it is a homonym of "C'est quoi ?", French for "What is it?". Owned and operated by Corus Quebec, it broadcast on 690 kHz with a power of 50,000 watts as a clear channel (class A) station, using a slightly directional antenna solely for the purpose of improving reception in downtown Montreal. The station had carried an all-news format since December 1999, identifying itself as ''Info 690''. Before that date, the station was known as CKVL and was on 850 kHz; it then had a news/talk format. Gilles Proulx
Gilles Proulx (born April 5, 1940) is a Canadian radio and television host in the province of Quebec. His radio career began in 1962, notably working for CHMP-FM and currently for Quebecor and Radio Ville-Marie. A strong Quebec nationalist, known for his conservative views and criticism of the anglophone community, he’s published 153 opinion columns in the Le Journal de Montréal as of 2020. His brother, Jacques Proulx was the former morning man of another local station CKAC. His niece is Caroline Proulx, minister of Tourism in the current Quebec government.
