CKKW-FM (99.5 FM) is a Canadian radio station licensed to Kitchener, Ontario, with studios located in Waterloo while its transmitter is located near Ottawa Street South and Trussler Rd in Kitchener. The station is owned by Bell Media and airs an adult hits format branded on-air as ''Bounce 99.5''. History The station originally began broadcasting on July 30, 1959 at 1320 AM, until it moved to 1090 AM in 1975. In February 1984, CKKW began AM-stereo broadcasting with a Motorola C-Quam format. Originally owned by Carl Pollock and later becoming a subsidiary of his company Electrohome, CHUM Limited acquired CKKW in 1993, and shortly thereafter instated the oldies format and ''Oldies 1090'' branding. The Team (radio Network)
The Team (corporately styled as The TEAM) was a Canadian sports radio network, which broadcast from 2001 to 2002. It was owned and operated by CHUM Limited, based on the existing format of their Ottawa station The Team 1200, and incorporated virtually all of the company's AM radio stations across Canada. It was dissolved as a national network in 2002 amid poor ratings, although a few of its former stations retained the sports format and Team branding as standalone entities. History The network was launched on May 7, 2001, but struggled to build an audience in many cities. In Toronto, for example, the network had to compete against Telemedia's The Fan 590, and found that much of its potential audience had already built a strong sense of loyalty to the more established station. CFCA-FM is a Canadian radio station broadcasting at 105.3 FM in Kitchener, Ontario. The station currently plays a Top 40/CHR format branded as ''105.3 Virgin Radio'' and is owned by Bell Media. CFCA's studios and offices are located in Waterloo, and their transmitter is on Baden Hill (also known as the Baden Tower), just west of the Kitchener city limits. History CFCA was first launched on 106.1 FM in 1949 by local broadcaster Carl Pollock. It was the first FM radio station in Canada to operate independently, without an AM sister station. Due to the limited audience reach of FM radio at the time, however, the station left the air in 1951. CHUM Limited was a Canadian media company based in Toronto, Ontario in operation from 1945 to 2007. The company was founded in 1945 as York Broadcasters Limited when it launched CHUM-AM 1050 but was acquired by salesman Allan Waters in 1954. CHUM had expanded to and owned 33 radio stations across Canada under its CHUM Radio Network division (now Bell Media Radio) and also owned other radio stations. Carl Pollock
Carl Arthur Pollock, OC (1903 – August 16, 1978) was a Canadian businessman. Born in Kitchener, Ontario, graduated from the University of Toronto in electrical engineering. A scholarship from the Massey Foundation financed two years at Oxford University, England. At university he showed exceptional talent in track and rowing. He taught for a short time at the University of Toronto, but his father's illness led him to choose a career in business and industry at the Kitchener electronics firm his father founded in 1907, Electrohome. Pollock joined the firm in 1930, was president from 1951 to 1972, and oversaw the most successful years of Electrohome's history. During the decades to follow, Electrohome produced many different consumer products, including furniture, electric motors, small appliances, and most importantly, radios and televisions. Bell Media Radio Stations
A bell is a directly struck idiophone percussion instrument. Most bells have the shape of a hollow cup that when struck vibrates in a single strong strike tone, with its sides forming an efficient resonator. Canadian Communications Foundation
The Canadian Communications Foundation (CCF) is a Canadian nonprofit organization which documents the history of broadcasting in Canada, particularly radio and television. Since 1995, the organization has distributed its collection via an internet website. It also provides a history of radio and television stations, including networks, programs, broadcasters and many others. The CCF was established in 1967, by the Canadian Association of Broadcasters. Its mission: to "commemorate throughout Canada the development of electronic communications".
