CJUC-FM
CJUC-FM is a Canadian community radio station that broadcasts at 92.5 FM at 50 watts in Whitehorse, Yukon. Its license is held by a local nonprofit The Utilities Consumers Group, a local organization that monitors utility providers and advocates for local residents in matters involving local utility services. The station is run by dedicated community volunteers. CJUC provides training opportunities for radio enthusiasts and members of the Whitehorse community. CJUC uses OpenBroadcaster for broadcast automation. History The station received approval on February 20, 2003. Whitehorse, Yukon
Whitehorse () is the capital of Yukon, and the largest city in Northern Canada. It was incorporated in 1950 and is located at kilometre 1426 (Historic Mile 918) on the Alaska Highway in southern Yukon. Whitehorse's downtown and Riverdale areas occupy both shores of the Yukon River, which rises in British Columbia and meets the Bering Sea in Alaska. OpenBroadcaster is a web-based, open-source system to run community radio and television broadcast transmitters with a simple web interface. History The initial concept was to develop a web based radio system to run emergency messages and public service announcements for export to Africa by using a windup radio designed by Trevor Baylis. . It was part of a Yukon College innovation project originating from Tagish Yukon Territory Canada. On Labour Day weekend, 1997 CFET-FM 106.7FM was launched, for the benefit of communities in Tagish, Johnson's Crossing and Marsh Lake, YT. It was a one-man operation, but local volunteers could record material for sending to the station via the internet for broadcast. FM Radio
FM broadcasting is a method of radio broadcasting using frequency modulation (FM). Invented in 1933 by American engineer Edwin Armstrong, wide-band FM is used worldwide to provide high fidelity sound over broadcast radio. Broadcast automation incorporates the use of broadcast programming technology to automate broadcasting operations. Used either at a broadcast network, radio station or a television station, it can run a facility in the absence of a human operator. They can also run in a ''live assist'' mode when there are on-air personnel present at the master control, television studio or control room. The radio transmitter end of the airchain is handled by a separate automatic transmission system (ATS). The Canadian Communications Foundation (CCF) is a Canadian nonprofit organization which documents the history of broadcasting in Canada, particularly radio and television. Since 1995, the organization has distributed its collection via an internet website.
