CANT Z.505
The CANT Z.505 was a prototype trimotor transport floatplane built by CANT in the 1930s. Development In 1934 the airline Ala Littoria issued a specification for the supply of a new scheduled seaplane to be used on its commercial routes by sea. The CRDA took part in the competition with a project entrusted to the engineer Filippo Zappata who designed a low-wing monoplane, a three-engine with boot configuration, moving away from the central hull configuration typical of the CNT/CANT production until then. The first flight took place on 10 July 1935. Tests of the aircraft revealed insufficient engine power, unable to provide design characteristics. The aircraft was also paid attention to by assigning the registration number MM.268 to it. Not having achieved good performance from the seaplane, the company decided to test the Z.505 on a conventional wheeled chassis. CANT (aviation)
CANT (''Cantieri Aeronautici e Navali Triestini'', the Trieste Shipbuilding and Naval Aeronautics; also sometimes labelled C.R.D.A. CANT) was an Italian aviation company which originally specialised in building naval aircraft, formed in 1923 as part of the CNT (''Cantiere Navale Triestino'', or in English Trieste Naval Shipyard). The company produced a number of designs for the Italian military, but ceased operations in 1944. History In 1921, the Cosulich family of Trieste, owners of CNT decided to enter the aviation business. Already active in shipping and shipbuilding, they followed the same pattern by establishing first an air taxi service (SISA, 1921) and then a seaplane workshop at Monfalcone (within the existing shipyard) in 1923. Filippo Zappata
Filippo Zappata (6 July 1894 – 30 August 1994) was an Italian engineer and aircraft designer. Zappata was born in Ancona. He worked for Gabardini, Cantieri Riuniti dell'Adriatico (CANT), Blériot, Breda, and Agusta, In the 1930s he designed a series of successful multi-engined hydroplanes such as the CANT Z.501 flying boat, CANT Z.506 floatplane, and CANT Z.1007 medium bomber. In association with test pilot Mario Stoppani, Zappata's designs flew 15 first flights and set 41 world aeronautical records. In the 1940s he designed a large four-engined airliner, the Breda-Zappata BZ.308, but the project was abandoned and never produced. Cesare Maria De Vecchi, 1st Conte di Val Cismon (14 November 1884 – 23 June 1959) was an Italian soldier, colonial administrator and Fascist politician. Biography De Vecchi was born in Casale Monferrato on 14 November 1884. After graduating in jurisprudence he became a successful lawyer in Turin. His stance on the First World War was interventionist, and he himself took part in the final events of the conflict, finishing the war with the rank of captain and various decorations for valor. Isotta Fraschini Asso XI R
The Asso XI was a family of water-cooled, supercharged V12 piston aeroengines produced in the 1930s by Italian manufacturer Isotta Fraschini, and fitted on a number of aircraft types built by CANT, Caproni and others. Design and development Isotta Fraschini produced a long series of engines with the name Asso (Ace, in English). The Asso XI R.C. was an upright, liquid-cooled V-12 engine with maximum power output in the range depending on the degree of supercharging. Floatplanes
A floatplane is a type of seaplane with one or more slender floats mounted under the fuselage to provide buoyancy. By contrast, a flying boat uses its fuselage for buoyancy. Either type of seaplane may also have landing gear suitable for land, making the vehicle an amphibious aircraft. British usage is to call "floatplanes" "seaplanes" rather than use the term "seaplane" to refer to both floatplanes and flying boats. Use Since World War II and the advent of helicopters, advanced aircraft carriers and land-based aircraft, military seaplanes have stopped being used.
