C. K. Chandrappan
C. K. Chandrappan (10 November 1935 – 22 March 2012) was a politician from Kerala, India. He was the Kerala state secretary of the Communist Party of India (CPI) and the president of All India Kisan Sabha at the time of his death. He was a member of the Lok Sabha of India representing the Thalassery (Lok Sabha constituency) from 1971 to 1977, Kannur (Lok Sabha constituency) from 1977 to 1980 and Thrissur (Lok Sabha constituency) from 2004 to 2009. Chandrappan served as Member of the Legislative Assembly of Kerala from 1991 to 1996 representing Chertala. Political life Chandrappan started his political life when he was a member of leftist youth federations in the 1970s. He took part in the Goa liberation movement and was jailed as a political prisoner on various occasions in Delhi, Kolkata and Thiruvananthapuram. Death C. K. Cherthala
Cherthala, , (formerly Shertalai, Shertallai or Shertallay) is a Municipal town and a Taluk located at National highway 66 in the district of Alappuzha, in the state of Kerala, India. Cherthala is the satellite town and industrial hub of Alappuzha. In the local administration, Cherthala is a municipality, while in the state administrative structure Cherthala is a taluk and its headquarters are in the district of Alappuzha. Etymology According to local legend, Vilwamangalam Swamiyar, the Kerala Hindu saint, while travelling through Cherthala, found an idol of the Devi with its head immersed in a muddy pond. The swami understood the divinity of the idol, took it out of the mud, cleaned it and consecrated it in a temple near the pond. Thus the place is believed to have gotten its name as ''cher'' meaning "mud" and ''thala'' meaning "head" in Malayalam. The deity of the temple has the name ''Cherthala Karthiyayani''. Goa Liberation Movement
The Goa liberation movement was a movement which fought to end Portuguese colonial rule in Goa, Portuguese India. The movement built on the small scale revolts and uprisings of the 19th century, and grew powerful during the period 1940–1961. The movement was conducted both inside and outside Goa, and was characterised by a range of tactics including nonviolent demonstrations, revolutionary methods and diplomatic efforts. However, Portuguese control of its Indian colonies ended only when India liberated Goa in 1961 and incorporated the territories into the Indian Union. Lok Sabha
The Lok Sabha, constitutionally the House of the People, is the lower house of India's bicameral Parliament, with the upper house being the Rajya Sabha. Members of the Lok Sabha are elected by an adult universal suffrage and a first-past-the-post system to represent their respective constituencies, and they hold their seats for five years or until the body is dissolved by the President on the advice of the council of ministers. The house meets in the Lok Sabha Chambers of the Sansad Bhavan, New Delhi. The maximum membership of the House allotted by the Constitution of India is 552 (Initially, in 1950, it was 500).
