History The farm community of Bland Shire was a former gold prospecting site in the Riverina region, centred on West Wyalong. The shire was named in honour of William Bland. Location and settlements Bland Shire is located on the boundary between the central west and Riverina regions. The area is adjacent to the Newell and Mid-Western highways. The largest town and council seat is West Wyalong. The region also includes the towns of Wyalong, Barmedman, Tallimba, Ungarie, Weethalle and Mirrool. Mirrool is a town in the northern part of the Riverina region of south-west New South Wales, Australia. The town is in the Bland Shire local government area and adjacent to the Newell Highway, south west of the state capital, Sydney. At the , Mirrool and the surrounding area had a population of 234. The place name ''Mirrool'' is derived from the local Aboriginal word meaning "Pipe Clay". Mirrool Post Office opened on 16 November 1911 and closed in 1982. A railway station opened with the opening of the railway line in 1908, and closed in 1985 after passenger services ceased in 1983. The town's pub was built between 1913 and 1916 and opened in 1917. Ungarie is a town in New South Wales, Australia which is the second major town of the Bland Shire, located in the Central West region of New South Wales. It is located west of Sydney and north of Melbourne, between the towns of West Wyalong and Lake Cargelligo and is situated above sea level. The town's name is derived from an Indigenous Australian word meaning "thigh". History John Oxley, explorer and NSW surveyor general, was probably the first European to cross through what is now the Ungarie district. This was part of his investigation of the Lachlan Valley area in May 1817. Barmedman, New South Wales
Barmedman is a rural village in the Bland Shire in the New South Wales state of Australia, located approximately half-way between West Wyalong and Temora. Barmedman began as a service centre for gold-mining operations in the area. Nowadays the local district has an agricultural economic base, including wheat and canola cropping and sheep grazing. Wyalong is part of the Bland Shire located in the Northern Riverina Region of New South Wales, Australia. Established as a gold mining town, it is now a quiet town with historic buildings a few kilometres east of West Wyalong, the major district service centre. At the , Wyalong had a population of 851. Newell Highway
Newell Highway is a national highway in New South Wales (NSW), Australia. It provides the major road link between southeastern Queensland and Victoria via central NSW and as such carries large amounts of freight. At in length, the Newell is the longest highway in NSW, and passes through fifteen local government areas.
