Birmingham Stallions (2022) Players
The Birmingham Stallions were a franchise in the United States Football League, an attempt to establish a second professional league of American football in the United States in competition with the National Football League. They played their home games at Birmingham, Alabama's Legion Field. They competed in all three USFL seasons, 1983–1985. During their run, they were one of the USFL's more popular teams, and seemed to have a realistic chance of being a viable venture had the USFL been better run. The owner was Cincinnati financier and Birmingham native Marvin Warner. The team's coach was Rollie Dotsch, who was previously the offensive line coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers during its Super Bowl years and ended up with the second most wins in USFL history. The Stallions starting quarterback for their final two seasons was Cliff Stoudt, a long-time backup to Terry Bradshaw with the Steelers. Legion Field
Legion Field is an outdoor stadium in the southeastern United States in Birmingham, Alabama, primarily designed to be used as a venue for American football, but occasionally used for other large outdoor events. Opened in 1927, it is named in honor of the American Legion, a U.S. organization of military veterans. Since the removal of the upper deck in 2004, Legion Field has a seating capacity of approximately 71,594. At its peak, it seated 83,091 for football and had the name "Football Capital of the South" emblazoned from the facade on its upper deck. Legion Field is colloquially called "The Old Gray Lady" and "The Gray Lady on Graymont". Stadium history Construction of a 21,000-seat stadium began in 1926 at the cost of $439,000. Ottawa Rough Riders
The Ottawa Rough Riders were a Canadian Football League team based in Ottawa, Ontario, founded in 1876. Formerly one of the oldest and longest-lived professional sports teams in North America, the Rough Riders won the Grey Cup championship nine times. Their most dominant era was the 1960s and 1970s, in which they won five Grey Cups. The team's fortunes waned in the 1980s and 1990s, and they ultimately ceased operations following the 1996 CFL season, 1996 season. The Canadian Football League (CFL; french: Ligue canadienne de football—LCF) is a professional sports league in Canada. The CFL is the highest level of competition in Canadian football. Mike Raines
Vaughn Michael Raines (born February 14, 1953) is a former professional and college football player. Raines was an Associated Press second-team All American his senior year at Alabama and was also chosen for the All-SEC defensive team. Raines was also the 1973 defensive player of the year at Alabama and played alongside Too Tall Jones in the 1973 Senior Bowl. Following the Senior Bowl Raines was drafted in the 1st. Round of the 1984 WFL draft by the California Suns and in the 6th Round of the NFL draft by the San Francisco 49ers. Raines chose to play in the NFL for the San Francisco 49ers instead of in the WFL. Following the 74 season he left the NFL for the CFL and played for the Montreal Alouettes. William Leslie "Buddy" Aydelette (born August 19, 1956) is a former American football guard. He began his career with the Green Bay Packers of the NFL. He was drafted by the Packers in the 7th round (169th overall) of the 1980 NFL Draft. He would go on to become noteworthy for being the most decorated guard in the history of the rival USFL. Stephen Owen Stephens (April 22, 1930 – January 29, 2021) was a broadcasting pioneer in Arkansas, who originally became well known as the host of ''Steve's Show'', a hugely popular television program in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Tom Banks (American Football)
Thomas Banks (born August 20, 1948) is a former American football center who played ten seasons in the National Football League (NFL). Banks played college football for the Auburn Tigers, and was then selected by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 1970 NFL Draft. He played for the Cardinals from 1971 through 1980, sitting out the 1970 season due to a knee injury. Banks was a four-time Pro Bowl selection, and played a total of 116 NFL games, missing all but one game of the 1974 season after sustaining a knee injury in the season opener that required surgery.
