Armenian Jazz
Yerevan's first jazz band was formed in 1936, by composer and trumpeter Tsolak Vardazaryan. In 1938, composer Artemi Ayvazyan founded the Armenian State Jazz Orchestra, the first in the Soviet Union. The orchestra's first drummer Robert Yolchyan became an important artist of Soviet and Armenian jazz, developing his own style over time and continuing to play and give master-classes until his death in early 2000s. Other jazz bands were founded in Nairi Cinema, Yerevan Park of Communars, and others. In 1954, Konstantin Orbelyan organized an Estrada quintet for Armenian Radio. In 1966, young composer Martin Vardazaryan founded the Estrada Orchestra, renamed in the 1970s as the Estrada Symphonic Orchestra under the direction of Melik Mavisakalyan and Yervand Yerznkyan. Then Stepan Shakaryan founded the jazz sextet Radio, and jazz trios were founded by David Azaryan and Artashes Kartalyan. Tigran Hamasyan
Tigran Hamasyan ( hy, Տիգրան Համասյան; born July 17, 1987) is an Armenian jazz pianist and composer. He plays mostly original compositions, which are strongly influenced by the Armenian folk tradition, often using its scales and modalities. In addition to this folk influence, Hamasyan is influenced by American jazz traditions and to some extent, as on his album ''Red Hail'', by progressive rock. His solo album ''A Fable'' is most strongly influenced by Armenian folk music. Even on his most overt jazz compositions and renditions of well-known jazz pieces, his improvisations often contain embellishments based on scales from Middle Eastern/Southwest Asian traditions. Vahagn Hayrapetyan
Vahagn Hayrapetyan ( hy, Վահագն Հայրապետյան) (born August 30 1968) is a jazz pianist, singer and composer. Honored Artist of Armenia. Biography Vahagn Hayrapetyan was born in Yerevan in the family of fiddler Karapet Hayrapetyan and Alice Adamyan. He graduated from the Tchaikovsky Music School and Yerevan State Conservatory as pianist and composer. Vahagn learned from Barry Harris and Frank Hewitt in New York City and worked and performed with many prominent jazz musicians such as Elvin Jones, Jimmie Lovelace, Leroy Williams, Ari Roland, Zaid Nasser, Chris Byears, Yaala Baalin, Keith Baala, Jason and Delfeo Marsalis and many more. Armen Martirosyan (musician)
Armen Martirosyan (Armenian Արմեն Մարտիրոսյան; born 18 February 1963, in Yerevan) is an Armenian musician and composer. Biography His first music lessons were given in his early childhood by his grandmother, who taught him the rudiments of the notes. At the same time, his parents introduced him to different genres of musical art (ballet, opera and concerts of symphonic music). In 1970, aged seven, he entered the well-known music school being already familiar with the notes, having perfect pitch and a sense of rhythm. Teachers noticed the absolute composing abilities and rare intuition for performing musical composition. In 1978, aged fourteen, he met Edvard Mirzoyan, the Chairman of the Composers’ Union of Armenia. Nuance Jazz Band is an Armenian ethnic jazz sextet active since 2009. Founded and led by Garik Saribekyan, Nuance is one of the most recognised and ethnically sounding bands on Yerevan jazz stage. Garik Saribekyan
Garik Saribekyan (born 26 April 1970 in Yerevan, Armenia) is a composer and musician, band lead and founder of Nuance Jazz Band. Garik is widely regarded as one of the most notable characters on the Armenian jazz stage, and has been named Honourable Culture Contributor of Yerevan in 2014. Early life Garik Saribekyan was born in a family of musicians and has become familiar to musical instruments since early age. His father, now Honoured Artist of Armenia, has noticed his outstanding feeling of rhythm when Garik used to tap rhythmic beat sequences on a chair, who, at that time was nearly as tall as the chair itself. Stepan Grigori Shakaryan ( hy, Ստեփան Շաքարյան, 23 October 1935 – 22 June 2019) was an Armenian jazz and classical composer, pianist, People's Artist of Armenia (2017), and professor at Yerevan State Conservatory. Biography Stepan Shakaryan was born on 23 October 1935, in Baku, Azerbaijan. In 1952, at the age of 17, he moved to Yerevan, Armenia. 2 years later, at 19 in 1954, Shakaryan entered the Yerevan Komitas State Conservatory. In 1956, Stepan met the Soviet Armenian composer Aram Khachaturian and was transferred to the Gnessin State Musical College, Moscow Gnesin Institute, then finished Leningrad Conservatory. In 1964, he returned to Yerevan, and in 1965, he won the Yerevan Jazz Festival's Gold medal. Jazz
Jazz is a music genre that originated in the African-American communities of New Orleans, Louisiana in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with its roots in blues and ragtime. Since the 1920s Jazz Age, it has been recognized as a major form of musical expression in traditional and popular music. Jazz is characterized by swing and blue notes, complex chords, call and response vocals, polyrhythms and improvisation. Jazz has roots in European harmony and African rhythmic rituals.
