Anabantiformes
The Anabantiformes , collectively known as Labyrinth fish. are an order of air-breathing freshwater ray-finned fish with two suborders, five families (Channidae, Aenigmachannidae, Anabantidae, Helostomatidae, and Osphronemidae) and having at least 207 species. In addition, some authorities expand the order to include the suborder Nandoidei, which includes three families - the Nandidae, Badidae and Pristolepididae - that appear to be closely related to the Anabantiformes. The order, and these three related families (classified as ''incertae sedis'' by the 5th edition of '' Fishes of the World''), are part of a monophyletic clade which is a sister clade to the Ovalentaria, the other orders in the clade being Synbranchiformes, Carangiformes, Istiophoriformes and Pleuronectiformes. Pristolepis
''Pristolepis'' is a genus of fish in the family Pristolepididae sometimes classified in the order Anabantiformes native to freshwater habitats in Southeast Asia and India's Western Ghats. This genus is the only member of its family, a family which, with the families Nandidae and Polycentridae is a group of taxa which are sisters to the Anabantiformes and form part of an unnamed and unranked clade within the series Ovalentaria, closest to the Carangiformes. Badidae
The Badidae (the chameleonfishes) are a small family (about 30 species) which has been placed in the order Anabantiformes. However, the 5th edition of ''Fishes of the World'' classifies the family as being a sister to the Anabantiformes, along with the Nandidae and Pristolepididae in an unnamed and unranked but monophyletic clade which is a sister to the Ovalentaria within the wider Percomorpha. Nandidae
Nandidae, the leaffish, are a family of small freshwater fishes which some authorities classify in the order Anabantiformes, but which the 5th edition of '' Fishes of the World'' classifies the family and the related Badidae and Pristolepididae outside that order as "sister-taxa". Fishes of the World classified these families and the Anabantiformes alongside Synbranchiformes, Carangiformes, Istiophoriformes and Pleuronectiformes in a monophyletic clade which is a sister taxon to the Ovalentaria but to which the authors do not assign a rank or a name. According to FishBase, the family includes three genera: '' Nandus'' of South and Southeast Asia with several species, and the monotypic '' Afronandus'' and '' Polycentropsis'' of tropical West and Middle Africa. Aenigmachanna
''Aenigmachanna'' is a genus of ray-finned fish in the order Ananbantiformes. It is the only genus in the family Aenigmachannidae, or dragon snakeheads. It contains two species, both of which are largely restricted to subterranean habitats in southwestern India, namely in the Western Ghats foothills in the state of Kerala. Both of the species in this genus display a unique array of traits that distinguish them from their closest living relatives, the true snakeheads in the family Channidae. These include a much longer and more slender body, numerous scales, a very long anal fin, and a lack of ability to maintain buoyancy. Molecular analyses indicate that they split off from Channidae around 34 or 109 MYA. The Anabantoidei are a suborder of anabantiform ray-finned freshwater fish distinguished by their possession of a lung-like labyrinth organ, which enables them to breathe air. Carangiformes is an order of the ray-finned fishes. The order is part of a clade which is a sister clade to the Ovalentaria, the other orders in the clade being Synbranchiformes, Anabantiformes, Istiophoriformes and Pleuronectiformes. Synbranchiformes
Synbranchiformes, often called swamp eels, is an order of ray-finned fishes that are eel-like but have spiny rays, indicating that they belong to the superorder Acanthopterygii. Taxonomy No synbrachiform fossil is known. The Mastacembeloidei were removed from the Perciformes and added to the Synbranchiformes after a phylogenetic analysis by Johnson and Patterson.
