Afronycteris
''Afronycteris'' is a genus of Vespertilionidae, vesper bat containing two species, both of which are found in sub-Saharan Africa. Its members were previously classified in ''Neoromicia'' before phylogenetic analysis found them to comprise a separate genus. There are two species in this genus: * Heller's serotine, ''Afronycteris helios'' * Banana serotine, ''Afronycteris nanus'' References {{Taxonbar, from=Q99906042 Afronycteris Bat genera ...

Banana Serotine
The banana serotine (''Afronycteris nanus''), formerly known as the banana pipistrelle, is a species of vesper bat found throughout much of Africa. It was previously known as ''Pipistrellus nanus'', but genetic analysis later reclassified it in ''Neoromicia''. However, more recent phylogenetic evidence indicates that it and Heller's serotine (''A. helios'') comprise the distinct genus ''Afronycteris''. Description Banana serotines are unusually small bats, with a total length of about , about half of which consists of the tail. Adults weigh only , although females are slightly larger than males. The fur is dark with golden or reddish brown tips, fading to greyish or near-white tips on the fur of the underparts. The wings are brown, sometimes with a narrow white border on the hind margin. The ears are triangular with a tragus (ear), tragus that has been described as "hatchet-shaped". The thumbs of banana serotines bear an unusual pad composed of ridged hairy skin with multiple se ...

Vespertilionidae
Vespertilionidae is a family of microbats, of the order Chiroptera, flying, insect-eating mammals variously described as the common, vesper, or simple nosed bats. The vespertilionid family is the most diverse and widely distributed of bat families, specialised in many forms to occupy a range of habitats and ecological circumstances, and it is frequently observed or the subject of research. The facial features of the species are often simple, as they mainly rely on vocally emitted echolocation. The tails of the species are enclosed by the lower flight membranes between the legs. Over 300 species are distributed all over the world, on every continent except Antarctica. It owes its name to the genus ''Vespertilio'', which takes its name from a word for bat, ', derived from the Latin term ' meaning 'evening'; they are termed "evening bats" and were once referred to as "evening birds". (The term "evening bat" also often refers more specifically to one of the species, '' Nycticeius humer ...

Genus
Genus ( plural genera ) is a taxonomic rank used in the biological classification of extant taxon, living and fossil organisms as well as Virus classification#ICTV classification, viruses. In the hierarchy of biological classification, genus comes above species and below family (taxonomy), family. In binomial nomenclature, the genus name forms the first part of the binomial species name for each species within the genus. :E.g. ''Panthera leo'' (lion) and ''Panthera onca'' (jaguar) are two species within the genus ''Panthera''. ''Panthera'' is a genus within the family Felidae. The composition of a genus is determined by taxonomy (biology), taxonomists. The standards for genus classification are not strictly codified, so different authorities often produce different classifications for genera. There are some general practices used, however, including the idea that a newly defined genus should fulfill these three criteria to be descriptively useful: # monophyly – all descendants ...

Sub-Saharan Africa
Sub-Saharan Africa is, geographically, the area and regions of the continent of Africa that lies south of the Sahara. These include West Africa, East Africa, Central Africa, and Southern Africa. Geopolitically, in addition to the List of sovereign states and dependent territories in Africa, African countries and territories that are situated fully in that specified region, the term may also include polities that only have part of their territory located in that region, per the definition of the United Nations (UN). This is considered a non-standardized geographical region with the number of countries included varying from 46 to 48 depending on the organization describing the region (e.g. UN, WHO, World Bank, etc.). The Regions of the African Union, African Union uses a different regional breakdown, recognizing all 55 member states on the continent - grouping them into 5 distinct and standard regions. The term serves as a grouping counterpart to North Africa, which is instead ...
