2005 Afro-Asia Cup
The Afro-Asia Cup was a cricket competition played for the first time in 2005 and which is intended to run for at least three years. The idea was to raise money for the Asian Cricket Council and the African Cricket Association, and the whole venture was given a massive boost when the ICC, somewhat controversially, agreed to give the series of one-day matches full ODI status. The inaugural competition was a series of three one-day cricket, one day matches played between an ACC Asia XI cricket team, Asian XI and an African XI. Controversially, the games have been awarded official One Day International status. The teams were selected by former Test cricket, Test match players rather than by national selectors. The ICC expected that there would be a strong competitive tender for television rights. However, the main television broadcasters, ESPN, ESPN/Star and Ten Sports, declined to bid. Cricket
Cricket is a bat-and-ball game played between two teams of eleven players on a field at the centre of which is a pitch with a wicket at each end, each comprising two bails balanced on three stumps. The batting side scores runs by striking the ball bowled at one of the wickets with the bat and then running between the wickets, while the bowling and fielding side tries to prevent this (by preventing the ball from leaving the field, and getting the ball to either wicket) and dismiss each batter (so they are "out"). Means of dismissal include being bowled, when the ball hits the stumps and dislodges the bails, and by the fielding side either catching the ball after it is hit by the bat, but before it hits the ground, or hitting a wicket with the ball before a batter can cross the crease in front of the wicket. 2007 Afro-Asia Cup
The second Afro-Asia Cup was played from 6 June until 10 June 2007, hosted by India. The three ODI and one Twenty20 matches were broadcast live on ESPN, after Nimbus had pulled out from the deal with Asian Cricket Council. The Twenty20 match did not have official status as a Twenty20 international or a regular Twenty20 match. Asia XI claimed the first title in the competition's history, following a tied series in 2005, with a 3–0 whitewash of the African XI. Asian XI captain Mahela Jayawardene was named player of the tournament for his 217 runs, including a half century and a century, in the three ODIs. 2023 Afro-Asia Cup
