2024 Kuwaiti General Election
Snap general elections were held in Kuwait on 4 April 2024 to elect 50 of the 65 members of the National Assembly. The election came after the dissolution of the National Assembly elected in 2023 on 15 February 2024 due to an MP allegedly insulting Emir Mishal Al-Ahmad. The elections were the first to be held during Mishal Al-Ahmad's reign and the fourth election held within four years. Electoral system The 50 elected members of the National Assembly were elected from five ten-seat constituencies by single non-transferable vote. Political parties are not officially licensed meaning candidates formally run as independents, although many political groups operate freely as de facto political parties. Mangaf ( ar, المنقف) is an area in the south of Kuwait City. It is a mix of old and new. The old is split into two areas; commercial and residential. Government housing from the 1980s formed the area with houses, while the rest was a large collection of residential tower blocks, a limited number of shops and fast-food places. There is a larger concentration of shops in the area locally known as Al Azeeziya. A concentration of mobile phone shops, computers, and more. It also has a branch of the Sultan Center chain. Mangaf now has many fast food chains such as KFC, Hardee's along with other famous restaurants such as Minutes, Steek, Bustan Al Turkey Restaurant etc. The suburb has witnessed a huge expansion with the additional area being mainly residential. 2024 Mangaf Building Fire
On 12 June 2024, an early-morning fire broke out at a residential building in Mangaf in Kuwait's Ahmadi Governorate housing 196 male migrant workers of NBTC Group, killing 50 migrant workers, at least 46 of whom were from India, and injuring around 50 others. Most victims died of smoke inhalation, while others were fatally injured from falling. The building's owner was arrested in the wake of the fire. Indian officials such as Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh offered condolences and aid for the relatives of the victims. They also arranged for the repatriation of the remains of their deceased nationals. Crown Prince Of Kuwait
The Crown Prince of the State of Kuwait is the heir apparent to the Emir of Kuwait. Under Article 4 of the Constitution of Kuwait, this position can only be held by the descendants of Sheikh Mubarak Al-Sabah, and must be designated within a year of the Emir's accession. This designation is given effect by a combination of the Emir's nomination, and its approval by the National Assembly, as signified by a majority vote of its members in a special sitting. Sabah Al Khalid Al Sabah ( ar, الشيخ صباح الخالد الحمد الصباح; born 3 March 1953) is a Kuwaiti diplomat and politician who served as the Prime Minister of Kuwait from 2019 to 2022. he served in different governmental posts from 2006 until 2019.
