2023 Tim Hortons Brier
The 2023 Tim Hortons Brier, Canada's national men's curling championship, was held from March 3 to 12 at the Budweiser Gardens in London, Ontario. The defending champion Team Canada rink, skipped by Brad Gushue won the event, and will go on to represent Canada at the 2023 World Men's Curling Championship on home soil at TD Place Arena in Ottawa, Ontario. It was a record fifth Brier title as a skip for Gushue. Brad Gushue and his team won the 2022 edition and entered as the reigning Team Canada. The event followed the same format at the past two editions that included Team Canada, the fourteen Canadian curling member associations and three Wild Card teams that are the top three teams that did not qualify from their provincial playdowns based on CTRS standings. CTRS Standings
The Canadian Team Ranking System (CTRS) is a point system used by Curling Canada to rank men's and women's curling teams across Canada. They are determined through points earned in various curling bonspiels held worldwide throughout the season. CTRS points are the basis of the World Curling Tour's Order of Merit and are also used as criteria in identifying teams that qualify for the Canadian Olympic Curling Trials. Beginning in 2018, the top two CTRS teams that do not otherwise qualify for the Scotties Tournament of Hearts or Tim Hortons Brier will earn the right to compete in a play-in game for a wildcard berth in those tournaments. Page Playoff
The Page playoff system is a playoff format used primarily in softball and curling at the championship level, the Indian Premier League and Pakistan Super League cricket tournaments. Teams are seeded using a round-robin tournament and the top four play a mix of a single-elimination and double-elimination tournament to determine the winner. It is identical to a four-team McIntyre System playoff, first used by the WANFL, SANFL and VFL in Australia in 1931, originally called the Page–McIntyre system, after the VFL delegate, the Richmond Football Club's Secretary, Percy "Pip" Page, who had advocated its use. Karsten Sturmay
Karsten Sturmay (born November 7, 1996 in Edmonton, Alberta) is a Canadian curler originally from Leduc, Alberta. He is formerly the skip of the Alberta Golden Bears men's curling team in university curling and on the World Curling Tour. Curling career As a junior curler, Sturmay won three provincial junior championships, in 2015, 2016 and 2018. At the 2015 Canadian Junior Curling Championships, Sturmay led his Alberta rink of Tristan Steinke, Brett Winfield and Mac Lenton to a 7-3 record before losing to Quebec in a tie-breaker match, missing the playoffs. At the 2016 Canadian Junior Curling Championships, he led his team of Steinke, Christopher Kennedy and Caleb Boorse to a 6-4 record, missing the playoffs. Mike McEwen (curler)
Michael McEwen (born July 30, 1980 in Brandon, Manitoba) is a Canadian curler from Winnipeg, Manitoba, who grew up in Brandon, Manitoba. McEwen won six Grand Slams in his career before his team qualified for their first Brier, Canada's national championship in 2016. He is noted as one of the top curlers using the Manitoba tuck delivery today. Career Early career In 1998, McEwen won his first of two Manitoba Junior championships, sending him and his team of David Chalmers, Bryce Granger and Kevin Schmidt to the 1998 Canadian Junior Curling Championships. There, he led his Manitoba rink to 9-3 round robin record, in 2nd place. This put the team in a semifinal match up against Ontario's John Morris. McEwen would lose the match 8–4, settling for third place. Brendan Bottcher
Brendan Michael Bottcher (born December 19, 1991) is a Canadian curler from Sherwood Park, Alberta. Bottcher is a three-time provincial men's champion, and was the skip of the 2021 Canadian men's championship team, having led Alberta to victory at the 2021 Tim Hortons Brier. Born in Sherwood Park, Alberta, Bottcher enjoyed a successful junior career winning the 2012 Canadian Junior Curling Championships and the 2012 World Junior Curling Championships. He was also the 2010 Alberta junior men's champion and the 2007 Alberta juvenile provincial finalist. Bottcher skips his own team out of the Saville Sports Centre in Edmonton. Darren Moulding
Darren Moulding (born December 2, 1982) is a Canadian curler from Lacombe, Alberta and curls out of the Saville Sports Centre and the Lacombe Curling Club. He is a former Canadian Junior Silver Medallist, a Canadian Mixed Champion, and represented Alberta in the 2017, 2018, 2020 and Team Wild Card in the 2019 Brier Canadian men's championship. Career Junior Moulding skipped the Alberta team at both the 2000 and 2003 Canadian Junior Curling Championships. At the 2000 Juniors, he led his team of Thomas Usselman, Ryan Inaba and Matt Taylor to a 5-7 record, missing the playoffs. Kevin Koe
Kevin Koe ( ; born January 11, 1975) is a Canadian curler. Koe is a two-time World champion and four-time Canadian champion. He was the skip of the Canadian men's team at the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang. Originally from Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, he now resides in Calgary, Alberta and curls out of The Glencoe Club. He learned to curl at the age of six in Inuvik, Northwest Territories. Nathan Young (curler)
Nathan Young (born November 18, 2002) is a Canadians, Canadian curling, curler from Torbay, Newfoundland and Labrador. He currently Skip (curling), skips his own team on the World Curling Tour. Career Young and his team have been competing together from a very young age. It was in 2015 when the rink claimed their first provincial championship in the U16 NLCA Provincials. From that point on it would be a few more years until the quartet won another provincial championship as they went straight up into competing with the U18 age group afterwards. In 2020, Young won his first provincial championship in the U18 category. 2018 Tim Hortons Brier
The 2018 Tim Hortons Brier, Canada's national men's curling championship, was held from March 3 to 11, 2018 at the Brandt Centre in Regina, Saskatchewan. The winning team represented Canada at the 2018 World Men's Curling Championship from March 31 to April 8 at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas, United States. This marked the fifth time the Brier was held in Regina, the first time since 2006. The 2018 tournament was the first to use a new 16-team format, featuring representation by all fourteen member associations of Curling Canada, alongside the defending champions (as Team Canada), and a new wildcard team. Jake Higgs
Jake Higgs (born December 20, 1975 in Regina, Saskatchewan, Regina, Saskatchewan) is a Canadians, Canadian curling, curler from Strathroy-Caradoc, Strathroy, Ontario. He coached the mixed doubles rink of Matt Hamilton (curler), Matt Hamilton and Becca Hamilton at the 2018 Winter Olympics. Curling career Higgs played second for Wayne Tuck, Jr.'s mixed team, that won a provincial championship in 2008–09, giving them the right to represent Ontario at the 2009 Canadian Mixed Curling Championship. Colin Hodgson
Colin Sterling-Wyatt Hodgson (born June 8, 1990) is a Canadian curler originally from Lacombe, Alberta. He is the former lead for Team Mike McEwen and currently plays mixed doubles with Chelsea Carey. Career While briefly living in Calgary, Hodgson's junior years saw him skip the Alberta team at the 2011 Canadian Junior Curling Championships, finishing in sixth place with a 6–6 win–loss record. He also won a gold medal at the 2007 Canada Winter Games. Hodgson later moved to Airdrie, Alberta and played third for Charley Thomas for a year. Following that season, he moved to Winnipeg and joined Reid Carruthers as the lead on his new team in 2014. The team represented Manitoba at the 2015 Tim Hortons Brier, finishing in 10th place.
