Austria, , bar, Östareich officially the Republic of Austria, is a country in the southern part of Central Europe, lying in the Eastern Alps. Franz Pacher
Franz Pacher (28 April 1919 in Prostřední Suchá, present-day Czech Republic – 3 March 2018 in Salzburg, Austria) was an Austrian civil engineer and a pioneer of modern tunneling. He is one of three men who are considered to be the chief developers of the New Austrian Tunneling method (NATM). During the later years of his career, he was involved in nearly 90% of all tunnel constructions in Austria. Early life and education After graduating from the Upper Secondary School in Graz, Franz Pacher studied civil engineering at the Technical University of Graz, from which he graduated in 1943. Career He remained at the Technical University of Graz as a research assistant in the field of hydraulic engineering until 1945. Thomas Pernes
Thomas Pernes (25 February 1956 – 26 February 2018) was an Austrian avant-garde composer and performance artist who lived and worked in Vienna. He studied piano with Bruno Seidlhofer and composition with Roman Haubenstock-Ramati. The start of his career in contemporary music was marked by the première of the 1st string quartet at Wiener Konzerthaus in 1976. Already in the early 1980s he had widened the narrow sphere of interest of the classical avant-garde. At a time when the term crossover was not yet known he worked with elements of folk music and jazz just as he used electronics to enlarge the possibilities of composition. Ute Bock
Ute Bock (27 June 1942 – 19 January 2018) was an Austrian educator who was known for her projects helping asylum seekers. Biography Bock was born in Linz. After high school graduation, she applied for a job at the municipality of Vienna and could start working as an educator. From 1962 until 1969, she worked in a school in Vienna. Afterwards, she started working for the youth care center Zohmanngasse in the Viennese district Favoriten and in 1976, she was appointed as its director. In the early 1990s, the youth welfare office increasingly sent youth with migration backgrounds to Ute Bock's center, also because they had already been turned away by other schools. This is when Bock started being involved in activism and humanitarian help for asylum seekers. In 1999, during a raid on her centre, about 30 young Africans were arrested for drug trafficking under the controversial "Operation Spring". Konrad Ragossnig (6 May 1932 – 3 January 2018) was an Austrian classical guitarist and lutenist. Ragossnig was born in Klagenfurt, Austria. He taught at City of Basel Music Academy, University of Music and Performing Arts, Vienna and the University of Zurich. He was the editor of several books on guitar music such as "Step by step. Basics of Guitar technique in 60 classical and romantic studies", Mainz 2007 and "Guitar Concert Collection", Mainz 2008. He died in Antwerp, Belgium. Niklasdorf Train Collision
On 12 February 2018, two passenger trains collided at Niklasdorf, Austria. One person was killed and 22 were injured. Accident At 12:45 UTC+1, Central European Time on 12 February 2018, two passenger trains were involved in a sidelong collision at Niklasdorf, Austria. The trains were a Deutsche Bahn EuroCity express train and a local train operated by ÖBB. Several carriages had one side ripped off. Carriages from both trains were derailed. One person was killed and 22 were injured. Both train drivers were amongst the injured. There were at least 60 passengers on the EuroCity train. Nineteen ambulances and two emergency doctors were amongst the emergency services personnel sent to deal with the accident. The injured were taken to hospitals in Bruck an der Mur and Leoben. Everyone had been rescued by 14:30. The railway between Bruck an der Mur and Leoben was closed as a result of the accident. The line between Graz and Sankt Michael in Obersteiermark was also closed. Storm Eleanor (known as Cyclone Burglind in Germany) was an extratropical cyclone and European windstorm that affected Ireland, the United Kingdom, France, Benelux, Germany, Austria and Switzerland on the 2–3 January 2018. Markus Wallner (born 20 July 1967) is an Austrian politician (ÖVP). Since 2011, he has been the governor of Vorarlberg. Life and work Markus Wallner was born on 20 July 1967, the son of Herwig and Theresia Wallner in the district capital of Bludenz. He graduated from his gymnasium in 1985. After graduation he began to study political science and history at the University of Innsbruck, where he was the chairman of the Student Union.
