Benjamin Thema
Benjamin C. Thema (born 1912, died 1982) was a Motswana educationist and politician. Thema was born in Ranaka, Bangwaketse Reserve. He became the first president of Bechuanaland Student Association in 1939. In 1946 he founded the Tshidi Barolong secondary school in Mafikeng, and in 1955 became its principal. He joined the Bechuanaland Democratic Party in 1964, and was elected to the National Assembly in the elections of 1965. Botswana Railways
Botswana Railways (BR) is the national railway of Botswana. History Botswana Railways (BR) was established in 1987 when the government of Botswana bought out the Botswana-based sections of the National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ). NRZ had been initially operating the rail system after Botswana had gained independence. Management of the BR is supported by RITES Ltd. of India. The opening of the Beitbridge Bulawayo Railway in Zimbabwe in 1999 resulted in a major drop in the volume of freight transit and income. As a response the BR has been considering the construction of a direct line to Zambia (Zambia Railways), bypassing Zimbabwe, to regain income from transit. On 27 February 2009, an announcement was made of the termination of all Botswana Railways passenger services. 1987 Botswana Electoral Reform Referendum
A referendum on electoral reform was held in Botswana on 27 October 1987, the first time a referendum had been held in the country. The proposal involved the creation of the post of Supervisor of Elections, which would be appointed by the government. The referendum was passed with 78.1% of voters in favour. Following the referendum, the next general elections, held in 1989, were boycotted by the Botswana National Front because the reforms did not provide for an independent electoral commission.
