The 1910 Australasian Championships was a tennis tournament that took place on outdoor grass courts at the Adelaide Oval, Adelaide, Australia. It was the 6th edition of the Australasian Championships (now known as the Australian Open), the first held in Adelaide and the first Grand Slam tournament of the year. The Grand Slam in tennis is the achievement of winning all four major championships in one discipline in a calendar year, also referred to as the "Calendar-year Grand Slam" or "Calendar Slam". In doubles, a team may accomplish the Grand Slam playing together or a player may achieve it with different partners. Winning all four major championships consecutively but not within the same calendar year is referred to as a "non-calendar-year Grand Slam", while winning the four majors at any point during the course of a career is known as a "Career Grand Slam". Grass Court
A grass court is one of the four different types of tennis court on which the sport of tennis, originally known as "lawn tennis", is played. Grass courts are made of grasses in different compositions depending on the tournament. Although grass courts are more traditional than other types of tennis courts, maintenance costs of grass courts are higher than those of hard courts and clay courts. Grass courts (in the absence of suitable covers) must be left for the day if rain appears, as the grass becomes very slippery when wet and will not dry for many hours. This is a disadvantage on outdoor courts compared to using hard and clay surfaces, where play can resume in 30 to 120 minutes after the end of rain. The 1910 Wimbledon Championships took place on the outdoor grass courts at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in Wimbledon, London, United Kingdom. James O'Day (tennis)
James J. O'Day (born May 23, 1954 in Worcester) is an American social worker and politician in the Massachusetts House of Representatives. Career Born and raised in Worcester, O'Day attended Worcester Academy, then received his Bachelor of Science degree in urban studies and management from Worcester State University in 1983. After college, O'Day became a social worker for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Department of Social Services, where he worked for 24 years. In 2007, O'Day ran in a special election to represent the 14th Worcester district in the Massachusetts House of Representatives. He won the election in April 2007 and was sworn in the following month. He is also a member of the Steering, Policy, and Scheduling Committee. Horace Rice
Horace Rice (5 September 1872 – 18 January 1950) was an Australian tennis player. The left-handed Rice, who played in knickerbockers and long black socks, won the Men's Singles title at the 1907 Australasian Championships, beating Harry Parker in the final. He was also runner-up 3 times (in 1910, 1911 and 1915). He won the Men's Doubles title at the 1915 Championships, partnering Clarence Todd.
