Chile, officially the Republic of Chile, is a country in the western part of South America. It is the southernmost country in the world, and the closest to Antarctica, occupying a long and narrow strip of land between the Andes to the east and the Pacific Ocean to the west. Church Of The Company Fire
The Church of the Society fire (8 December 1863) is the largest fire ever to have affected the city of Santiago, Chile. Between 2,000 and 3,000 people died, probably the largest number of people to die in an accidental fire in any one building in the world. Events The ''Church of the Society of Jesus'', ( es, Iglesia de la Compañía de Jesús) was a Jesuit church located in downtown Santiago. The day of the fire was the celebration of the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, one of the most popular festivities of the religious calendar, and the temple was adorned with a profusion of candles, oil lamps and wall coverings. In the main altar, a large statue of the Virgin Mary stood over a half-moon that in itself was a huge candelabra. Fred Dennett
Fred Dennett (June 27, 1863 – September 28, 1928) was the 32nd Commissioner of the General Land Office from 1908 to 1913. Biography Dennett was the son of Rev. D. Richard and Eleanor (Garforth) Dennett. He was born at Valparaiso, Chile on June 27, 1863. He was educated at Malvern College, Great Malvern, England. He was a graduate of George Washington University Law School with LL.B. in 1894 and LL.M. in 1896. Dennett married Elizabeth A. Comerford of Morris, Illinois, on November 23, 1892. He edited and part-owned the Milton, North Dakota Globe. He was a member of the North Dakota House of Representatives. Francisco Nef
Vice Admiral Francisco Nef Jara (August 3, 1863 – June 9, 1931) was a Chilean naval officer and member of the Government Junta that ruled Chile between 1924 and 1925. Nef was born in Valparaiso. At the age of 16, on March 1, 1879, he joined the Military Academy, where he remained until 1881, when he transferred to the Naval Academy to finish his studies. By 1883, he already was a second-class ensign and joined the crew of the ironclad ''Blanco'', under the command of future president Jorge Montt. During the remainder of the War of the Pacific, he served in the ''O'Higgins'', ''Chacabuco'' (blockading Pacocha, in northern Peru), ''Abtao'' (patrolling the extreme south of Chile), ''Cochrane'' and ''Pilcomayo''. In November 1884 he was part of the crew of the ''Blanco'' that took that ship back to England for a complete rehaul. Joaquín Figueroa
Joaquín Figueroa Larraín (1863 - May 30, 1929) was a Chilean politician, and brother of President Emiliano Figueroa. Biography Figueroa was born in Santiago, the son of Francisco de Paula Figueroa Araoz and of Rosalía Larraín Echeverría. He studied at the San Ignacio School and then went on to study law at the University of Chile, graduating on January 13, 1886. He married Elena Amunátegui Valdés but they had no children. Figueroa decided to embark on a political career and joined the Independent Liberal Party. On October 25, 1907, President Pedro Montt appointed Figueroa as Minister of Industry and Public Works, a position which he kept until August 29, 1908. President Montt also appointed him as Minister of Finance between June 15 and September 15, 1909. Then, in a 1908 by-election, he was elected Senator for Valparaíso, Chile and then reelected in 1912.
