Fernande De Mertens
Fernande Hortense Cécile de Mertens (9 May 1850 - 24 January 1924) was a Belgian-French painter. Life Fernande de Mertens was the fifth of six children of the baron Edouard Mertens and his wife Sophie Lambertine Woelfling, and Fernande was thus a baroness herself. Hélène Échinard writes that in Marseille, Fernande attended the École des Beaux-Arts where she was taught by Théodore Jourdan and Dominique Antoine Magaud. Aged 35, on 27 April 1886, she married the French painter Pierre Jean, and thus acquired French citizenship. In 1888, she became a member of the Société des Artistes Français. The couple had a dedicated studio at the Boulevard de la Corderie in Marseille, where she taught the use of pastel – a popular technique at the time for young girls of respected background. Marietta Hannon Rousseau, also known as Mariette Rousseau (born 1850, d. 1926) was a Belgians, Belgian mycologist and taxonomy (biology), taxonomist specializing in cryptogamic plants and fungi. She published several works on fungi from 1879 to 1905 with Elisa Caroline Bommer, focusing primarily on Belgium. Biography Youth and marriage Mareitta was born on 20 March 1850 to Joseph Hannon, a professor of zoology and comparative anatomy at Free University of Brussels (1834–1969), Brussels University. Her father started teaching her about plants when she was young, although the rest of her education is not known. Her knowledge of mycology was self-taught. In 1871 she married Ernest Rousseau, a friend of her fathers and also a professor at the university. Emma De Vigne (30 January 1850 - 3 June 1898) was a Belgian still life and portrait painter, who came from a family of artists from Ghent. Her paintings were exhibited in Europe, as well as in South America. Biography De Vigne was born on 30 January 1850 in Ghent. The family were all artists: her father, Pieter, and uncle, Felix, were sculptors, and she and her sisters, Louise and Malvina, were painters. It was her uncle, Félix De Vigne, taught her to paint; she later married his son, her cousin Jules De Vigne, who was a lawyer and a writer. Henri Leys, Hendrik Leys or Jan August Hendrik, Baron Leys (18 February 1815 – 26 August 1869) was a Belgian painter and printmaker. Pierre-Joseph van Beneden FRS FRSE FGS FZS (19 December 1809 – 8 January 1894) was a Belgian zoologist and paleontologist. Life Born in Mechelen, Belgium, he studied medicine at the State University of Leuven, and studied zoology in Paris under Georges Cuvier (1769–1832). In 1831 he became curator at the natural history museum in Leuven, and from 1836 until 1894 was a professor of zoology at the Catholic University of Leuven. In 1842 he became a member of the ''Académie des sciences de Belgique'', becoming its President in 1881. In 1875 became a foreign member of the Royal Society of London and in 1884 an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. Jean-Joseph Thonissen (b. Hasselt, Limburg, 21 Jan., 1817; d. Leuven, 17 Aug., 1891) was a professor of law at the Catholic University of Leuven and a minister in the Belgian Government. Legal career Thonissen first performed duties in the magistracy and the administration of Limburg, but was occupied with juridical works on penal law. When dismissed by the Liberal (anti-clerical) ministry, the University of Leuven appointed him in 1848 to the chair of criminal law. In 1863 he was elected to Parliament.
