Théodore Chassériau
Théodore Chassériau (September 20, 1819 – October 8, 1856) was a Captaincy General of Santo Domingo, Dominican-born French Romanticism, Romantic Painting, painter noted for his portraits, historical and religious paintings, allegorical murals, and Orientalism, Orientalist images inspired by his travels to Algeria. Early in his career he painted in a Neoclassicism, Neoclassical style close to that of his teacher Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres, but in his later works he was strongly influenced by the Romantic style of Eugène Delacroix. He was a prolific draftsman, and made a suite of prints to illustrate William Shakespeare, Shakespeare's ''Othello''. Lion Monument
The ''Lion Monument'' (german: Löwendenkmal), or the ''Lion of Lucerne'', is a rock relief in Lucerne, Switzerland, designed by Bertel Thorvaldsen and hewn in 1820–21 by Lukas Ahorn. It commemorates the Swiss Guards who were massacred in 1792 during the French Revolution, when revolutionaries stormed the Tuileries Palace in Paris. It is one of the most famous monuments in Switzerland, visited annually by about 1.4 million tourists. In 2006, it was placed under Swiss monument protection. American humorist and author Samuel Clements (Mark Twain) praised the sculpture of a mortally wounded lion as "the most mournful and moving piece of stone in the world." Félix Ziem
Félix Ziem (26 February 1821 – 10 November 1911) was a French painter in the style of the Barbizon School, who also produced some Orientalist works. Biography He was born Félix-Francois Georges Philibert Ziem in Beaune in the Côte-d'Or département of the Burgundy région of France. His mother was a native of Burgundy who had married an immigrant from Croatia. Originally, Ziem planned to be an architect, studied in the École des Beaux-Arts in Dijon, and for a time he worked as an architect. In 1839 he moved to Marseilles, where he received some informal instruction in painting from Adolphe Monticelli.Poulet & Murphy 1979, p. 45. Roberto Bompiani
Roberto Bompiani (February 10, 1821 – January 19, 1908) was an Italian painter and sculptor. Bompiani was born in Rome. By the age of fifteen, he had enrolled at the Accademia di San Luca in Rome, where in 1836 he shared a first prize with fellow student in design, Angelo Valeriani. By 1839, he was able to win prizes both in sculpture and painting at the Accademia. He was remarkably prolific, especially as a painter. He is particularly known for paintings of scenes from ancient Rome, for which he gained the nickname ''"the Italian Bouguereau". Among his sculptural works, almost all from 1865–1870, are ''Sappho'' ( Palazzo Castellani, Rome), ''Ruth'', and the statuettes ''Amore che cerca chi deve ferire'' and ''Alexander tames Bucephalus''. August Becker (27 January 1821, Darmstadt - 19 December 1887, Düsseldorf) was a German landscape painter; associated with the Düsseldorfer Malerschule. Life and work He began his studies in 1837, with the court painter, Johann Heinrich Schilbach. His first study trips took him through Fischbachtal, Rüdesheim and the Nahe region. In 1840, he attended the landscape painting classes taught by Johann Wilhelm Schirmer at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. He remained there after completing his courses, because Düsseldorf provided a profitable market for his art.
