Bysarna
Bysarna were a Swedish motorcycle speedway team based at the Gamla Speedway Track, in Galgberget, north of Visby on the island of Gotland in Sweden. They were four times league champions of Sweden. Season summary History 1921 to 1951 The beginning of speedway in Visby can be traced back to November 1921 when the Gotland Motor Association was formed. Eight years later in 1929 the Gotland Motorcycle Club were riding dirt track races. A meeting was held at Gutavallen on 23 October and several other meetings took place at various venues before the war. After the war a suitable piece of land was acquired in Galgberget and the track was completed in 1951. 1967 to 1977 Although a track existed in Visby there was no team until 1967, when a team called Bysarna entered Division 3 east, during the 1967 Swedish speedway season. Swedish Speedway Team Championship
The Swedish Speedway Team Championship is the team championship of speedway in Sweden. Season by season History The Championship was introduced in 1950. In 1982 the Championship was renamed with a new league called the Elitserien being introduced. previously the highest league had been known as the Allsvenskan but since 1982 it has been the second tier of Swedish speedway. Between 1986 and 1999 the team that finished top of the league were declared champions because there was no play off. 1971 Swedish Speedway Season
The 1971 Swedish speedway season was the 1971 season of motorcycle speedway in Sweden. Individual Individual Championship The 1971 Swedish Individual Speedway Championship final was held on 2 October in Stockholm. Göte Nordin won the Swedish Championship for the second time. The final ended in controversy because Anders Michanek refused to pariticpate in a re-run and was disqualified. Michanek and Göte Nordin both finished on 14 points and in the race off Michanek beat Nordin after the latter pulled out of the race, claiming that he saw a red light to stop the race. The match referee ordered a re-run but Michanek refused to take part claiming there was no red light. The incident resulted in violence between rival supporters and was headline news in Sweden. 1988 Swedish Speedway Season
The 1988 Swedish speedway season was the 1988 season of motorcycle speedway in Sweden. Individual Individual Championship The 1988 Swedish Individual Speedway Championship final was held at the Kumla Motorstadion in Kumla on 27 August. Per Jonsson won the Swedish Championship for the third consecutive year. U21 Championship Henrik Gustafsson won the U21 championship for the third consecutive year. Team Team Championship Bysarna won the Elitserien and were declared the winners of the Swedish Speedway Team Championship for the fourth time. The Bysarna team included Per Jonsson, Tony Olsson, Dennis Löfqvist and Brian Karger. Getingarna and Gamarna merged to become became Stockholm United and Tuna Rebels changed their name to Eskilstuna. Tony Olsson
John Tony Olsson (born 13 March 1965 in Visby, Sweden) is a former international motorcycle speedway rider. He was a member of the Sweden speedway team when they finished third in the 1988 and 1989 World Team Cup finals. He also represented his country at Test level. Career Born on the Norland Island Gotland, Tony Olsson began his career with the club Bysarna. In 1982 he made his debut for the senior team and already 1983 he won Rider of the season. He twice finished runner-up in the Swedish Under-21 Championship in 1984 and 1985. One year later in 1986, Olsson finished runner-up in the World Under-21 Championship, despite suffering an engine failure in one heat. In 1988 he played a huge part in Bysarna becoming Swedish champions. The same year he won the Swedish Pairs Championship with former World Champion Per Jonsson. Sören Sjösten
Sören Willy Ernfrid Sjösten (born 12 December 1938, Krylbo, Sweden, died 1999) was a motorcycle speedway rider. He won the world pairs championship in 1974 with Anders Michanek and became world team champion three times representing Sweden, in 1962, 1964 and 1970. Sjösten also appeared in six individual World Championship Finals with two bronze medals as best result. Both third places was received after losing race-off heats for silver medal, the first time to Barry Briggs and the second time to Ivan Mauger Sjösten rode for Masarna, Vargarna and Bysarna in the Swedish leagues and for Belle Vue Aces, Wolverhampton Wolves and Bristol Bulldogs in the British League. An excellent starter, he was renowned for having a 'wild' style of riding with the rear of the bike sliding further out on the bends than is usual and was often considered rough on his opponents. He retired after his brother Christer was killed in a meeting in Brisbane, Australia in 1979. World final appearance ...
